Anyone know much about this course?  I searched for past mentions on here; there have been a few in passing, but nothing substantive.  Is it truly a Mackenzie course?  Worth driving to?  Still operating well?  Any other thoughts?

David beat me to it. Compared to a lot of club websites, this one is very good and gives a nice history of the club and course which suggests minimal changes since MacKenzie designed it. Neil Crafter hopefully might be able to add something but I think we can safely say it is a MacKenzie course.


As for whether it is any good, I haven't played it or heard anything about it but from the pictures on the website is certainly looks well worth a play.

Yes this is absolutely a new Dr MacKenzie course and constructed by his brother's company. It opened in 1924.

Great to hear from you, Neil--the absolute authority on Dr. MacKenzie!  What do you mean by "new"?  I had never heard of it as a MacKenzie course before?  What's your opinion of it?  Worth traveling to see?

Thanks Jim - what I mean by new is that it was a totally new course built on virgin land as opposed to the remodelling of an existing course. It's long been known as a MacKenzie design so not a new discovery.


Being in Australia I've not had the chance to visit Teignmouth, but if I lived in the UK I'd definitely try and visit.

Jim is it worth seeing? Yes if you are going to be close anyway, but nearby I'd play return visits to the short and fun Dawlish Wraren (Braid?) and Thurlestone (watered down Colt) before Teignmouth. East Devon beats them all and I'm also keen to see Churlston and Yelverton.


Tomas's excellent images reveal the problem. Practically all that fairway bunkering has gone and with hard running fairways and todays aerial game, both the first and the second shot have lost its value here. Plus there's a few greens that are obviously new.


Plan a visit to Cavendish or Pitreavie if you want to see some MacKenzie genius design features.

Jim, I've played Teignmouth (pronounced tin'muth if I recall correctly?) and its certainly worth playing if you are in the area.


The road crossing in the middle of the back nine isnt a busy road, but I drove across it one day in thick fog without realising I'd crossed a golf course in the car (this was pre H&S days so there was probably some slightly mad members out there!)


The last few holes seem a bit crowded and I think there have been some changes that arent MacKenzie in there. The plans and aerials show the 17th tee as to the right of the 16th green, but they are now well left. I think they also sometimes close the 16th as its a tiny green and use an extra hole between 17 and 18?
