Karl,

Very cool finds.   I guess the question I'd have is something I've been wrestling with in interpreting a number of club history's is the tension and controversy at the time re: amateur vs professional in terms of architecture and wanting to avoid the look of impropriety doing "labor" for the former.   Also, was Joe Lloyd credited with designing other courses during that period?

Often, both stories are true, or happened either in conjunction or in evolutionary development of courses.   It's probably worth it's own thread to examine this fully, but I don't have much time at present to participate fully.

Mike,

Joe Lloyd is credited, in the same 1900 Harper's Official Golf Guide, with laying out the 1895 nine hole course at the Essex County Club, MA. This is the same club that Willie Campbell would succeed him.

Joe Lloyd is a bit elusive to history here in the US. He would travel back and forth to Pau, France where he also had golf pro employment. The last historical thing I have found on Lloyd is a trip to the US, arriving NYC on 23 May 1933 from his home in Pau to visit a relative on Long Island, NY.

This is a link to a French publication about golf at Pau. You will find towards the end photos and info on Lloyd. It loads a little slow.

Karl,

These are great finds whether it was Leeds, Lloyd, or some combination over the earliest years of Cummaquid.  A 1993 publication on golf in Cape Cod I have states the club has no idea who designed their first nine holes and their website seems to be similarly vague.

Hoping someone from the club sees this and can pull the threads together into whole fabric

Mike,

I swapped emails with the Cummaquid GC staff today and they were very interested to see what I had found. How they interpret Leeds and Lloyd I do not know. Leeds may have very well selected the ground and laid out the course and it was Lloyd who worked out the details. I can only guess.

Adding in a few articles of interest concerning Cummaquid and Joe Lloyd.

The first article mentions that John Reid, the founder of St. Andrews had a summer house in Cummaquid.
Golfdom., June 1966:

The second article lists the hole names and yardages at Cummaquid in 1927.
Golf Illustrated., August 1927:

The final article is titled: “A Tribute to Hoylake”, written in 1898 by H. J. Tweedie.  Tweedie mentions Joe Lloyd was originally from Hoylake, along with many other prominent players:
