Re: Should a course have a signature bunker?

There are a few the cardinal at prestwick, hell at TOC, Big Bertha at The Honors, Kavanaugh’s kidney at Victoria National, Devil’s Arse at Pine Valley, and the church pews at Oakmont. Etc.

These bunkers/traps and to the ambiance of the course. Bonus points for quirk and variety. They are on holes you look forward to when you are lacing up the spikes.

I think every course should have the memorable sand pit.

I like to play into these things for the experience. Keep your score if you may, I’m going to gather my rose buds while I play.

Do we want a signature bunker?

I think if possible, all courses need some bold features which make standout holes. It doesn't mean these are the best holes, but they visually stand out. It's often easiest to make these features bunkers as a way to create contrast, but sand certainly doesn't need to be employed.

One of the best examples of what I mean is Huntercombe. Yes, trees have denuded the impact of the features and some bold bunkers are no longer, but it's easy to see what was and what could be...all on a fairly unremarkable site.

True story:

Years ago, Naccarato came to #10 at PV and asked his caddy how far it was.

His caddy pulled a 7-iron and Tommy waved him off, grabbing an 8 instead.

"That is not enough to get over the Devil's Asshole," said the sensible bag toter.

The response: "Do you think I flew all the way across the country *not* to play out of that bunker?"

Did he miss the bunker?

I will give a definite yes and no......

For example, I don't apologize for putting the Giant's Ridge footprint bunker out there, but I would apologize if that was the best or only reason to go see the course.

Tommy is actually an exceptional short/mid-iron player, so plopped it right in the center of Satan's rectum, climbed to the bottom, got a line from his Caddy and managed to extract his ball with one swipe.

And yeah, he made the putt.

Of course he made the putt . . . . .

On the subject of "signature bunkers," my recollection is Tommy is one of three people to identify the architect on something like 16 of 18 historical sand hazard photos in the Bunker Bar at Bandon.

Does he tip the caddy extra when hitting into bunkers on purpose?
