Golden Age courses and those just before New
« on: June 15, 2021, 08:18:48 PM »
I played Columbia CC (DC) today and it had that very old school feel. As an avid Philly Flynn guy I’m not used to rolly polly fairways and severely sloped greens.

When did the demarcation take place between Golden Age and the earlier period of architecture?  What are the differences for you?

I wonder how we date the golden age. Is CCC before the golden age or at the beginning? And you're right everything about it has an ancient kind of design feeling. How often do we come across a hole like 17?

Features have been softened. Wayne Morrison sent me a photo of 16 green with severe erupting horseshoe bumps no longer seen.

Played Eagles Mere yesterday and Huntingdon Valley today.  Built about ten years apart and using Flynn at both places they couldn’t be more different in the land.
Up and down in the mountains versus using the slopes near the city made for major differences.

I prefer the long flowing of Huntingdon Valley myself.
