The Pit was a pretty special course — actually three courses in one, at least by theme and setting. I would imagine C&C will do a great job, especially with money infused to what was a dream by the maples Family that had fallen on difficult times. I recall playing the Pit with my good friend David Welchel. The laughs on that trip were second to none!  ;D

Pine Straw mag reporting this C&C routing is "back on the table," whatever that may mean.

Did Pinehurst miss the boat by not buying either Forest Creek or Southern Pines GC when they were available? Dormie Club 5 years ago?

They need more course(s) right now, not 2-3 years from now.

Seems like the better immediate option to building a new course is to buy an existing course like they did with #9, but what would be in the area that would be worthy? I can’t think of anything in the area.

Like The Pit?  Hard to believe it's been over 10 years since they bought the course/land.

The Pit is mildly adjacent to the main property, unlike Southern Pines and Dormie.

Forest Creek is close, but immutable. Perhaps the resort tested the waters by purchasing Pinehurst National and converting it into #9. This gave them the intel they needed on future courses we cannot alter properties, ones hemmed in by homes and roadways.

The Pit property offers a canvas that can be muted, then recast. Plus all that land along route 5.

Why does Pinehurst need more courses that badly?

In my mind, they would do better to renovate/restore the ones they have now than going around town buying a 500-member club like Forest Creek and having to deal with the issues that come with that.

Take course #1 which has great bones and could be really special with some TLC. Renovate that and instead of charging $100 a round you charge $200 which pays for the reno while also taking away a bit of the crowds with increased pricing.

They have plenty of courses that could use the work. For the courses like 7, 8, etc they can give those the complete renovation like they did with #4 which seems plenty popular at a very high price point.

I think after things opened up last summer, Pinehurst had a big upswing. The resort was slammed in October and our group had a tough time getting on the Cradle, Everything else was sold out.

If this come to fruition w/ the new SP & a C&C #10 Pinehurst is going to be better and better.

With Southern Pines being marketed under the same umbrella as Pine Needles/Mid Pines it’s going to cost Pinehurst some business. # 2 will retain its position as the local shrine but if you like Donald Ross and for a better price(at least as I write this) PN/MP/SP will be tough to beat. I would covet a membership!!!!

Thinking way outside the box. Buy PN/MP/SP and the additional 400 acres behind Pine Needles. Perhaps that won't relieve much current pressure as the courses are all booked through the fall but the additional land has great topography and the Little Nine has possibilities.

Hey Jay,

Isn’t there a set of Drawings the Dyes did for Pine Needles on that extra acreage?

Please keep us up to date - Thanks!

I have no idea re:the Dyes but 100 acres of the original tract is now a school and the remainder has preliminary development approval and infrastructure. An unlikely scenario but I just threw it out there.

I think #8 is one of the most highly regarded/popular courses at the resort for the general public (regardless what people here think of it) so I doubt they'd want to make any changes to it.
