14 at Muirfield Village. Shouldn’t it be a par three?
« on: June 05, 2021, 05:03:52 PM »
When the vast majority lays up doesn’t it invalidate the allure of a short four?  That approach is really a par three since most end up near the same place.

Well, it's not that easy if you miss the fairway with the tee shot.

Do you want to make the 8th hole at Pebble Beach a par-3, also?

It makes a difference from which side of the fairway you play your second shot.

That’s a good example. There the layup is because of the penalty not to achieve an ideal distance for your second shot so I have seen varying lengths of tee shots.

Hasn't the landing area short left of the green been extended and widened to permit (the tour pro) to hit driver?

Thus making the lay up tee shot a choice rather than a requirement?

I feel like you’re conflating a short par 4, which 14 is, with a drivable par 4, which it’s not. Two precise shots required for all players. Like 8 at Cypress, 18 at Inverness, etc.

Based on what I saw the last two days the hole hasn't changed much.  They didn't resolve the primary "risk" issue as I see it, as the creek still wraps in from the left, crosses the fairway, and exits into the pond on the right.  So you still have to carry the creek with your tee shot and hit a narrow strip of fairway less than 20 yards wide with water all along the right, and deep rough on the left.  It seems the risk still far outweighs the reward and I wonder if anyone even tried it.

Link to the hole as it was before:

Kalen, I don't know about this year but last year a number of guys did go for the green with very mixed results. JN, on the telecast, said that the hole was not set up this year to entice guys to go for it.

Jack said 12 and 14 were left alone.

I don't know if the greens were still rebuilt or not, though.

I think that forcing layups with irons to a wedge shot is weak.
