Hole in 1 on a par 5
« on: January 15, 2021, 02:35:29 PM »
Some of you may have read that some guy made a 2 on the par 6 hole at Lake Chabot in Oakland.

Its the 5th time someone has made a "condor" according to the pro at Lake Chabot but the other 4 that are recorded are people making a hole in 1 on a par 5.  Discuss a hole how this is possible other than hitting a cart path?

U   Tee is at one end of the U, green at the other. Hill or tree within the contour of the U.
The architect thought it impossible, but player hits a very high ball directly at the green

For Lake Chabot specifically, there are no par 5's on the back 9, just the one par 6.

Of the 3 par 5s on the front, #8 is the only one I could see this happening as it plays approx. 480 downhill. The other two play down to the bottom of the valley and back up the other side to the green.  And given how wet the course usually is, I couldn't see anyone running a ball very far up the hills there.

At the course where I learned to play, there was a horseshoe/ boomerang par 5 and they guarded the direct route with interior OB and discarded tires (to keep shots from bouncing through).  It was about 320 yds to get it through the tires and then another 30 or so to get on the green.  I don't remember anyone successfully getting on the green, but some did get near it when it was down wind on occasion.

Not surprisingly, the first par 5 on that nine also had internal OB and was a right angle dogleg.  It could have been nearly drivable by power hitters due to the baked out conditions if it didn't have a cluster of trees planted firmly against the tee box.  That hole was 380 on a direct line and 474 if you didn't cut the corner.

And now that I'm ruminating on this, I realize that the 5th hole was another par 5 with interior out of bounds.  3 out of 4 par 5s with interior OB- I hope that is a record.

The 2 on the par 6 was strange. He holed from 120 yards with a wedge for his second. The drive was 540 yards steeply downhill. I am surprised more don't hit the green in two, so on that basis it should be a par 5. A par 6 needs to be 700 yards I think.

I looked at a course some years back where the final hole could have been driveable and would have been a par 5. GCA will laugh at it but it gets the punters in.

Well I'm glad the writer managed to satisfy himself after hounding the poor guy and not leaving him alone.

This might be possible at the 11th at Tobacco Road? Would be a blind angle, but I wonder what the carry is from tee to green on a direct line over the trees.

From the back tee, it is 347 yards (+uphill) to carry the bunker in front of the green safely, but you might be able to sneak it on the right side of the green at 338.

Google Earth is an amazing tool.  Nobody should need to ask such questions anymore, practically every course in the world is at your fingertips!  [Except if they were under snow or cloud for the latest photo.]

There's a golf course in Calgary called Silver Springs (that's pretty awful but anyways), local pro/good player Wes Heffernan has driven the green on the par 5, 3rd a couple times. It's a really, really sharp dogleg left that you have hit it so high over the homes, but I was told when I played the Alberta Match Play he made 2 a couple times there. I couldn't imagine playing a guy who makes 2 that way in a match.
