Gary Player's Southern Dunes course - Indianapolis?
« on: September 24, 2020, 09:47:19 AM »
GP's comments re: trees has sparked a few comments here about his courses. There is one course in Indianapolis that bears his name - Southern Dunes, on Indy's south side. According to their website ( https://southerndunesgolfcourse.com ) the course opened in 2003. I've never played it, nor have I ever had a conversation with any one who has.

A quick search through GCA's Discussion Group turns up 0 mentions of it. Anyone here ever play it?

I'm a northside Indy guy myself, and have a bit of a blind spot on central Indiana courses on the south side, but I may just take the long trek down there and check it out. There's also a Tim Liddy course close to it, Hickory Stick, that I've not played. I do enjoy most all of Liddy's work in the area, so that would be a nice opportunity to kill 2 with 1.

I checked their website. How can a course survive with $39 and $33 dollar green fees with cart? The course in the golf/ski resort where I live charges $58 and $45 and loses $200,000 a year. Skiing and the bike park make up for the loss.

The impression I have, though I hardly ever travel to play golf outside IN, is that Indy is generally less expensive than other regions. Whether that allows a course to survive with rates similar to Southern Dunes I have no idea though.

I do know I'm spoiled here, between being less expensive generally, and having a job situation that allows me to take advantage of weekday senior rates on top of it. I walked Sahm, an early Dye course on the NE side of town, yesterday for $15.
