Fires
« on: September 16, 2020, 07:33:04 PM »
What is happening in the west is beyond horrific.  Live in New England and while fall weather is glorious, there is no blue sky.  Sunrise/Sunsets are very different due to smoke in the atmosphere...Hard to believe..

While golf is the least of the issues for those impacted, I am curious as to the effect of the fires on golf?

Cliff -

Greetings from San Francisco, where today the sky is blue and the air quality is very good for the first time after a week or so of very poor air quality and orange/grey skies. Almost every outdoor surface here is covered in a thin film of ash dust from the fires.

I am not aware if the fires in California have damaged any golf courses.

It was either Thursday or Friday last week that the air quality was so bad the Olympic Club closed their golf courses for play and sent everyone home. I don't know if any other clubs in the Bay Area did the same.

We are still 60-90 days from the beginning of our winter rainy season. I just hope there are no more fire outbreaks between now and then.

Cliff,
In Oregon the air quaiity along the I-5 corridor is hazardous for the most part. My club closed on day because of air quality, The LPGA is in Portland this week and it was dropped from 72 to 54 holes.  The stalwarts in my group play 6 days a week, but haven't been out for a week.
There are two golf courses that concerned me in Middle Oregon. Tokatee, east of Eugene and Blue River was very fortunate that the Holiday Farm fire started just to its west, so there was no physical impact,  Elkhorn Valley seems to be within the fire boundary of the Beachie fire, but I saw a NYT map that showed the fire along the north edge of the course, but not on the course proper. But that was 5-6 days ago.
In the greater Medford area no fire at Eagle Point or Rogue Valley, but it looks like part of Centennial CC may have been impacted along 2and 3. I would guess sprinkles on would save the holes. Just check their facebook page and they were not directly affected.

I've seen it said multiple times that golf courses often handle fires well and serve as a good fire break.

The linked article seems to say as much.

One of the reasons Bandon Dunes got its environmental permits was that they sold it as a fire break for the town, which burned down in 1936 in a gorse fire from the north.
