Imagine: Last 18 holes of golf
« on: February 28, 2020, 11:10:04 AM »
If you only have 18 holes of golf left to play in your life;
but they can be spread among any courses - What 18 holes would you choose.
_______________________________________________________________

My 18:

St Andrews - 11, 17, & 18;
Augusta - 5, 12, & 13
TPC - 17
Winged Foot - 10 & 18
Oakmont - 18
Cypress Point - 15 & 16
Pebble Beach - 7, 8, 9, 17 & 18
Algonquin GC - #1  (The course I grew up caddying & working at for 15 yrs).
______________________________________________________________

Par 66 -- 2 par 5s; 8 par 3s; 8 par 4s - 5405 yards (middle tees)

I guess like shorter challenging par 3s & 5s, and brutal par 4s.

Even were it possible (presumably at an advanced age) to "spread holes around", I don't think I'd do it.  The composition/pacing/routing of the golf course has a LOT to do with how holes are experienced.

So for me, it's really back to the question of what course would be my last round -- and I'm 95% sure that would be Yeamans Hall (and that would be a golf course really good for an elderly gent).

A bit of a soppy answer but it would be Dewsbury District Golf Club 1-18. It was where I learned to play and would seem to be a fitting way to finish.

What I liked most about compiling this list is that after I came up with the 18, it made me think about what I like in a golf hole.  What type of golf hole do I enjoy playing, and why.

I like some fun, some hard, some pretty.  I could have come up with many more if I moved outside the US!

I tend to agree, and mine would be Mid Pines so long as I could have one last drink at the bar overlooking Number 18.  But because this is a fun exercise, I tried to limit it to 5 courses with stretches of holes I particularly like:

North Berwick 13-16
CPC 7-9, 16 and 17.
Golspie 5-7
Lahinch 3-5
Woking 2-4

One Par 5, Six Par 3s, and 11 Par 4s.

I am sure that by later today, I will revise and extend my remarks.  It was really difficult to leave Pasatiempo 10-14 out for example.

Does it have to be done this year?
Too much travel to look at an eclectic sound, so I'd have to pick Pacific Dunes. (Sagebrush if it was open.)

For those of us deep into the back nine of our lives, having one last go at an eclectic combination of holes from another lifetime has only limited allure. The longer holes - thinking #16 at NGLA into the breeze - are now exhausting and require coaxing two mighty blows out of that constricted swipe I pretend is a legitimate golf swing.

The dainty dandies - #15 at Cypress, the Dell, #11 at Pac Dunes - are more likely to produce a shank, followed by an embarrassing series of spastic twitches in which a picture of Frosty on the scorecard is more likely than Colonel Bogey.

So, if we are to dive into the Time Tunnel (TV reference from the B&W era), my last round is with Dad, circa 1972 - on the old Ocean Course at Olympic. I had a trusty set of Orlimar woods, my faithful putter, hand-me-down irons and Faultless golf balls, stuffed into a red leather golf bag.

Adult life was far in the future and each hole was its own adventure - there was no need to mentally project your score at the turn and the hole looked like a bucket with suction pumps.

Dad would sneak some Red Man, thinking (wrongly) that Mom would not notice the stains on his shoes and pants. The fog cascaded over the bluffs and Fidel, the kindly old Pilipino bartender, always snuck free milkshakes to the junior members.

Life was simple, pure and my parents laughed when I took a divot out of my bedroom rug.

It never got better . . . . . . and the image in the rear-view mirror is far more comforting than the narrowing, bumpy road ahead.

Interesting question, and responses.
Like Greg, though, I couldn't imagine wanting my last round to be on an 'eclectic' course -- even if magically all the golf holes on my list could be found in one place.
I do find myself thinking two things: that I'd want to play my last (and actually first) round at The Old Course.
It's where it all started (for golf) and so it's fitting that it be where it all ends (for me).
Also, I'd want to be alone.
I mean: no one else on the course, and no one else playing with me, not even a caddie.
Maybe that's bad of me, or selfish, or immature/unenlightened.
But I'd want my last round of golf also to be a meditation, and a prayer.

To hell with all that hodge-podge mess.

Give me CPC 1-18...and one of those old cypress trees can fall on me after I hole out!  ;D

Kalen,

Pretty hard to disagree with that statement and sentiment. But when I am at the end of my bumpy road and playing back holes in my head:

#1–Old White
#2–Royal Dornoch
#3–PH2
#4–Woking
#5–Lahinch
#6–Brora
#7–Old Mac
#8–Crail Balcomie
#9–Cog Hill 4
#10–St George’s Hill
#11–Pasatiempo
#12–Mid Pines
#13–Elie
#14–Bandon Trails
#15–North Berwick
#16–CPC
#17–Golspie
#18–The Island Club

Yes, only one Par 5 plus three Par 3s in a row. It is what it is for whatever it is worth.

Perhaps not a surprise, but choosing one hole from CPC and North Berwick very difficult. Perhaps surprising, but doing same for Elie and Golspie plus leaving Kilspindie out. The three easiest choices were Woking 4, St.George’s Hill 10, and Pasatiempo 11. One might think CPC 16 easy, but Pacific Dunes 16 is one of the best holes that I have played.

Now in my alternate universe:

#1–Elie
#2–North Berwick
#3–Old Mac
#4–Woking
#5–Golspie
#6–PH2
#7–Primland
#8–Swinley Forest
#9–CPC
#10–St. George’s Hill
#11–Ballybunion
#12–Lahinch
#13–Nairn
#14–Royal Dornoch
#15–The Island Club
#16–Pac Dunes
#17–Kapalua Plantation
#18–Kilspindie

Yes, no Par 3s on the back. Oh well.

18 holes at Jasper Park.

The golf course suits me.
I love being in the Rocky Mountains.

Pick the course, hopefully one that I've enjoyed previously.

Holing out the uphill 8 footer for birdie on 18; shaking hands with the days playing partners, settle up the wagers in back of the green and keel over on the trudge over to the clubhouse. - other folks behind us need to hole out and it would be rude to hold up play having this happen on the putting surface.

If this is my last round then i'm old, dying (or both), I'll limit myself to a single course; Eastward Ho! on my beloved Cape Cod (Chatham.). Following the round, I'll head over to the Squire for steamers and a few pints.

For Bing Crosby (rest in peace) it was La Moraleja Golf Club near Madrid, Spain. Playing off a 13 handicap, he and his partner took the match to the 18th hole, losing 1 down. They all shook hands as Bing said 'That was a great round of golf, fellas. Let's go in and get a Coke". With that they headed to the club house -- and just then Bing collapsed with a massive heart attack, passing away instantly.
Not a great golf course, but a great way to go.
