Caddies at Tobacco Road
« on: February 07, 2019, 03:38:09 PM »
I recently played at Tobacco Road and loved it. I know that there are caddies available through a service that the club contracts with. I’m not saying you can’t walk but I would think few do. Has anybody hoofed it around TR?

Yes. Always.

Do you think the walk is north of 7 miles?

I even walked it with a caddie I brought over from Pinehurst. It's an easy walk.

JK-It’s a wild cart ride so it seems like it would be a strenuous walk. Lots of elevation changes with some decent green to tee walks. “Easy” is the adjective you want to go with to describe the trek?

I have walked it a few times. I even walked it with Forest Fezler the year it opened. It wasn't an easy walk but it certainly is doable.
But then again, I will walk the front nine at Ballyhack.

Always walk. If you know where to cut off the circuitous cart paths its is a fine walk. There are 3 longer green to tee walks but on 12 to 13 you get to see the pin position on 18 and on 14 to 15 you get a look at the pin on 16, both otherwise semi blind shots and of course on the walk from 9 to 10 there is the stop at the clubhouse for a pulled pork sandwich.

90% of the caddie rounds are forecaddies, which is a great idea at TR, especially for 1st time players.  In college we could play TR for free if we walked it so I walked it at least 50 times.  It's really a pleasant walk.  Dormie is a much tougher walk.  The green to tee walks on the front are pretty short.  The long walks on the back from 12 to 13 and 14 to 15 aren't too bad.

If you see me walking, it's easy by definition.

Ordered a caddie through the available e-service the day before, a couple days after last Christmas.  I thought I’d walk but would appreciate a caddie given my 36 at Dormie Club the day before.  Caddie didn’t show—and e-service didn’t charge—so I walked with three guys in carts who knew the course.  A fine walk but one needs a bit of direction.  Some of the holes reminded me of those surreal photos of Golf in Hell, and many of the greens seemed quite a bit like TD’s  at Ballyneal Mulligan.  But worthwhile and a good walk in every sense.

I will be a nay sayer and say TR is not a good walk, by a long shot. The course is generally flatish,  but spread out and with road crossings.  Sure its walkable, but the walk, imo, detracts from the experience, much like at Dormie.

Thanks for the responses. I am a pretty dedicated walker but will choose to ride again the next time I play. It just feels like a cart course to me.

I walked Tobacco Road with a rickshaw - it was an easier walk then I thought, especially since I was following seasoned veterans.  Next time, I would spend the extra money and get a caddie.

This sounds right to me. I played it shortly after it opened back in '98(?). My then girlfriend/now wife played it with me, it's the only course she's ever played! We were paired with a patient pair of brothers. The ride from 14 to 15 seemed like a mile, but I'd guess if you walked it regularly, you'd know the shortcuts that would have a dramatic impact. I'd almost guess you could leave your bag on the 18th tee after you walked off the 14th, and just take a few clubs with you for 15-17.

All these years later, I'm still not sure what to think about TR. I will say, it brought me to this website, so I'm grateful, while the rest of you probably rue the day..... :)

Seems the walkers got it right.  I measured with Google Earth and its just over 4.5 miles from #1 tee to 18 green. I also avoided taking most of the shortcuts thru waste bunkers. Even adding an extra 10% for some wild shots or helping playing partners looks for balls put its at just over 5 miles.

Kalen-What do the two different size alternating circles represent? Thanks.

It does that every other mouse click....not sure why.

When I took the measurements, it was zoomed in.  Then I zoomed it out to take the screen shot.

I don’t disagree with the measurements or the other variables that you added in as it all seems to make sense and appreciate the effort that went into it. It just seems like it would have been longer. It was cart path only on 1,11, and 13 which are all par fives so I did a fair amount of walking to get to my ball on those holes.
