Drew Rogers continues with renovation work at Plum Hollow

While the project is a renovation, Rogers will be respecting Alison’s original design intent. “The greatest challenge with this direction relative to Alison is that we had very little information available to study what Alison originally built at Plum Hollow,” he said. “Much of his work was impacted not long after the course opened, and that trend of architectural influence and change continued until the present day. So, that really placed the onus on the vision of our plan, to channel what we know about Alison’s work, his tendencies, the character of the forms he produced, and how he inspired golfers to think their way around the course.
“Our hope is that our work will help the course look, feel and play much more like it was probably intended by Alison in 1921, but with the benefits of modern construction and heightened management of the turf.”

I grew up 3 miles from
Plum Hollow and ironically it’s one of the few courses in Metro Detroit I’ve never played.

Steve:

I've followed Drew's work at Plum and have met with him and Plum member Jay Hults several times to discuss Alison and Plum.  The comments re Alison are straight on.  C&A called it "their" course until Wilfrid Reid came in and redid (added/subtracted?) the bunkering in the mid to late '20s.  Then it disappeared from their list.  So we talked scale and "ferociousness" of Alison's bunkers vs Colt.

We (historians and the club specifically) have almost nothing re Plum and Alison. No drawings, routing plans, pictures from the '20s, etc.  They had a clubhouse fire, sound familiar?  Drew has done excellent work "in the manner of" and we should all be happy with Plum taking on Drew and doing it right (or Alison).  His work on 11 thru 13 alone would be worth the price of admission with tree removals and more exciting use of the ravine edges, river bed, etc.

Hopefully somebody with photo skills, both in the field and on the computer, can post here.  The before and after photos will be informative and stunning.

Dave Wigler was (is?) a long time member.  He hasn't posted for awhile.  If you are there, thoughts?
