Belmont CC in Boston. How much Ross remains?
« on: April 20, 2011, 05:18:10 PM »
An old friend has invited me to play at Belmont CC (formerly known as Belmont Springs), just outside of Boston. He says it's a Ross course - so I looked it up on the web and searched around in here a bit as well.  It sounds to me like a lot has been done to the course since Mr. Ross was there.

Still a Ross?

This subject needs more discussion on this site.

I will start by suggesting a 51% test for what is left of the greens, bunkering and routing.

Here's a Nov. 9, 1920 Boston Post article discussing the changes made to the original 18 hole course.

Gives you a little bit of insight into how the game was progressing between (a) 1909 when Ross, his brother and Findlay first contributed to the intitial design and (b) only a decade later.

Here's a depiction of the course after those changes taken from a Mass Golfer article.

I meant to add all of this to the following thread which has a bit more discussion of the early changes and links to the Mass Golfer article, but posted in this one by accident:

Eric-Don’t hesitate on heading to Belmont. It’s still got a fair amount of Donald Ross features and is a fun and challenging golf course with a first rate presentation. If you go in the Fall make sure the Patriot’s won the preceding week as Robert Kraft and his family are members along with a lot of other New England faithful. I really enjoyed the day there last Summer.
