Goat Hill Park- A worthy endeavor
« on: January 14, 2015, 03:08:42 PM »
I thought I'd share with everyone this venture of John Ashworth.

This course was/is infamous for it's hilly terrain (I can attest, it's a tough walk!) and difficulty for such a short course. It went down hill for years under bad management and was almost sold off for a soccer center. But now, John Ashworth has bought it and he has a vision for this place that I think is rather unique and might just work. It is advertised that Tom Doak will be redesigning the place pro Bono and I think this will be a shining star for getting people to play the game.

Take a look.

I played Goat Hill two weeks ago, it is aptly named! The guy at the counter gave me a sideways look when I told him I'd like to walk. He then offered me a free bottle of water which just barely got me through the front nine as it was 80 degrees. After living in San Diego for 25 years I had never heard any buzz about it until the recent town meeting where they rejected the soccer fields and John Ashworth came to the rescue. He is now the lease holder and the staff said he's done a lot to improve the place already. They were unaware of Tom's involvement and indicated they were doing some turf reduction and tree clearing. They plan to rebuild a couple of greens also.

The course has some of the most butt puckering par 3's on the planet! The 1st and 18th are pretty flat but everything else is knob to knob, with some pretty nasty swales in the middle. Some of the greens appear too small to accommodate the shot needed; perhaps they have shrunk over the years. The par 4's are short but all feature severe uphill shots into the green. Sadly there is a lot of grass missing on the greens, some worse than others. But when you only charge $15 for 18 holes on foot how can you complain.

Goat Hill Park partners renew lease

Goat Hill Park partners renewed their lease to manage the beloved Goat Hill golf course on Oct. 12. Terms of the 30-year lease have been changed to credit the $3.6 million-plus in course renovations the partners have already made.

Ongoing improvements to construct a new clubhouse will be done on the ability to pay. Upgrades to the 18-hole short course include fairways improvements, reshaped and re-sodded t-boxes, turf reduction and landscaping of hilly areas within the 72-acre grounds.Changes turned what was deemed an “unplayable dirt track” into a solid, quality course. Golfers have reported a night and day difference. Other major improvements are piping of reclaimed water for irrigation and a new sprinkler system. There is also a new roof on the clubhouse, electrical improvements, renovations to the open-air bar, added kids tee boxes, new signage and a new fleet of golf carts.

Councilman Jack Feller asked about future commercial development on the site. Doug Eddow, city real estate manager, said more will be put into the retail component to help the course reach financial sustainability.

Since this is an old thread, thought I should update it to mention that Todd Eckenrode did the work on the golf course.  Brian Slawnik and I had agreed to help John with the course, but when he needed to do the renovations, Brian was overseas working on Tara Iti, and John couldn't wait.

It's a cool project and I hope it continues to thrive.  The course is unusual to say the least -- it started out as a nine-hole private club, but when the club folded a local pro somehow turned it into a very short, tight 18 holes because he didn't think nine holes could support itself.  It's also the only place I have ever seen disc golfers take a golf cart to play!
