Roberto De Vicenzo - RIP
« on: June 01, 2017, 04:23:04 PM »
Very sad news out of Argentina today, with the passing of Roberto De Vicenzo. For those that got to know him, we have lost a friendly, kind, humorous person. For the world of golf, I am convinced we have lost a real ambassador. From very humble origins, golf educated Roberto and gave him a lot, but Roberto contributed to golf like very few. His positive impact on caddies, amateurs and pros in South America is unparalled. Having started to play abroad at a relative old age, Roberto managed to win more than 200 tournaments worldwide, including the Open Championship againts some legendary players. I am sorry to be out of Argentina, this is one funeral I wanted to attend. Rest in peace Roberto.

Roberto DeVicenzo vs. Tony Lema in Greece on Shell's WWOG (1966):

Also vs. Sam Snead at Congressional CC (1968)

The match vs. Snead is divided into multiple clips.

The Golf Channel ran a highlight film of RDV's 1967 Open win at Hoylake. You can find a link to it here, although you may not be able to view the video outside of the U.S.

Do not forget the scorecard error at the 68 Masters, he handled the mistake with dignity.

He seems to have figured out how to live life right, and thankfully got to enjoy that life for over 90 years.
Golf Digest has posted a wonderful 2006 profile by the always excellent Jaime Diaz.

Humphry Maud was the first British Ambassador to Argentina after the Falklands War. He struck up a golfing friendship with Vicenzo and they were regular partners. On one occasion Vicenzo played a par-72 course using only a putter. He went round in 72!
