OT: Friday Night Frolics Redux - Old Doak @ Tom Petty
« on: November 22, 2024, 04:02:57 PM »
Been many’s a moon since we last had a FNF. Sorry, but the old muso in me just can’t help himself. I’m NEVER not going to be able to refer to it thus!

I love Tom Petty's music.  And my wife went to school with his wife!  We did go to a concert -- at Red Rocks, it was awesome -- but I never got to meet him.

Oh, yes.
Heard/saw American Girl over here sometime around 76/77 and just LOVED it. Started following him, buying albums, posters, t-shirts, etc.
What a career. Years of fabulous stuff, great collaborations.
Gone seven years already. Very sadly missed.

The 2024 Apple TV series called Bad Monkey (based on book by Hiaasen) featured soundtrack of Petty covers, with permission from Petty estate.  Available on Spotify.  Good stuff.  25 or 30 songs.

May 77 supporting Nils Lofgren?  Saw them at the old Hammersmith Odeon

Happy memories.

I saw TP way back in November 1979 at the Masonic Temple (a very cool theatre and part of massive Masonic complex) in Detroit when he just started touring Damn The Torpedoes. I remember he played Shout and I Fought The Law. Saw him again after the album went huge in June 1980 at Pine Knob. I recall him playing Something Else. Never heard Petty do another Eddie Cochran cover during later shows.

One thing I will say about TP is every time I saw him the show was different. He was always slipping in odd songs/covers and different versions of his own tunes. Never once walked away from his show disappointed. It’s strange to miss a person I never met.

What a pleasant surprise!  I love Marty Stuart & the Superlatives.  Their little music program on RFD-TV is one of the best American music programs ever.

I've been playing the first TP & HB album driving around in my car the past couple of days. Some very good song writing and polished playing for a 1st recording by a young band.

Runnin' Down A Dream, the 4 hour documentary (2007), is required viewing for every TP fan.

In 1986, when I was trying to woo my now wife of 36+ years, I got tickets to a Grateful Dead concert because she was and still is a Dead fan (never has made any sense to me), and Tom Petty was the opening act. Never thought much about him until the uniqueness of the Traveling Wilburys which was only a couple of years later.

But if you want to see what players thought when they watched Hogan, check out Petty’s reaction to Prince at the Rock and Roll HOF performance of While My Guitar Weeps Gently.

I saw Marty Stuart a few years ago opening for either Sheryl Crowe or Steve Miller. Can't remember which but he was really good and told some stories about Johnny Cash, He was married at one time to Cash's daughter. I think he started playing professionally when he was 12.

Sorry to jump this thread further, but here is 14-year old Marty Stuart playing mandolin and singing with Lester Flatt's band on the Porter Wagoner show (circa 1972).

Here is MS & HFS giving a Tiny Desk Concert earlier this year. Great stuff.

That's probably a perfect analogy. Like when the interviewer asked Clapton what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world and he answered "go ask Prince".

Those stories are so funny.  Same was supposedly asked of Jimi Hendrix and he said Terry Kath.  Etc.
