In praise of the girl next door?  How bout Reigate Heath being quite close to Walton Heath?  Wonderful little sister course who may not be the beauty of the big sister, but she has her own alluring charms.  Much the same could be said for Aiken and Palmetto....and for Corballis and The Island. Not that many years ago the same was said about Cruden Bay and Royal Aberdeen and North Berwick and Muirfield. The green fees are so high on all four of those courses that all talk of girl next door should rightfully be abandoned.

Ciao

In the Surrey vein, Wentworth East. And Sunningdale Ladies.

Does Deal count? The New at St Andrews. Bethpage Red springs to mind also. Those last two are courses that would likely be viewed in much higher esteem if it weren't for their better known brethren.

Tom, perhaps Belvedere was too subtle for my one-and-done assessment but I found it more like the girl who makes her own clothes and is well liked by the other girls.  Perhaps she needs dolling up with all those original bunkers.

She's the prettiest girl next door in these parts and we are happy with her.  You just stay the hell away from her. 😉  Bunkers aren't everything, you know.

Berkshire CC in Reading, PA hiding in plain sight near....not much of anything.

If it was closer to Philly those who love LuLu would like Berkshire better.

Speaking of next door, how about Merion West?

Wf's two courses are like making it with both of the bosomy Houlihan Twins, but the girl RIGHT next door is worth a few dates too -- Quaker Ridge -- a Fran Drescher--Westchester cougar type.

The girl down the street is Bonnie Briar, who might have been a charmer back in the day, but now its like Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard.

Finally, there's the municipal pin cushion, Saxon Woods, who's the beer-goggled floozy you knocked up senior year and spent most of the rest of your since-miserable life playing.

On Chicagoland’s tony North Shore, just around the corner from the vaunted Raynor designed Shoreacres sits Knollwood, a Hugh Alison gem of a golf course on a sprawling 265 acre site. Also nearby and well worthwhile are Bob O’Link, Skokie, Old Elm and Exmoor. This collection may not quite rival the Winged Foot coterie, but it’s a grand handful, to be sure.

I have not had the pleasure of playing Shoreacres, but if Knollwood is the Girl Next Door, Shoreacres must be a helluva woman. Knollwood is really good.
