Drainage was a lot easier before wall to wall irrigation and soil moisture meters....

At Ionia CC Ross built a 230 yard, uphill par 3 to a punchbowl green.

Joe,

Its true.  In a separate discussion recently, I was discussing the rational drainage formula, developed long ago, and its known tendency to under estimate drainage runoff.

One component of computing drainage volumes is to asses how much runoff a particular land use type, like a golf course, will shed.  Many charts suggest using 25-40% runoff.  I believe those numbers on a 1930 era golf course, which was likely to be dry, but now, most courses are likely to be near optimum moisture condition nearly every day via irrigation to match ET.  Thus, instead of 30-40% runoff, I believe its much likely to be higher, maybe double that.

So, yes, more surface drainage to convey water is required, just to be safe.
