Chicago Golf gets inaugural U.S. Senior Women's Open in 2018
« on: February 06, 2016, 01:55:38 PM »

So the Raynor/Macdonald gets a rare public showing. Much appreciated!

USGA announced Saturday 2/6. Pine Needles gets the 2019 USSWO.

Last dance at Chicago Golf was the 2005 Walker Cup. The 2018 dates are 7/12-15. Plan accordingly.

Great to see a venue like Chicago GC rise to the occasion. Pine Needles will host in 2019.

That's fantastic!  It will be a real treat to see the senior ladies play the course more as intended rather than the Walker Cuppers who turned it into a pitch and putt.

Out of curiosity, why does a club like CGC who likes to keep a low profile and doesn't need the $$ nor is lacking for potential members decide to host a USGA event?  Does the USGA lobby these courses into hosting or does the club let them know of their interest?  It would be interesting to know what goes into making an event like this possible.

Women's and Senior golf telecast ratings are hardly through the roof, combine into Women's Senior and what are the potential $$ benefits and for whom other than a group of deserving women who have no current venue for their talents?

I would suspect that it is an opportunity for CGC to host an inaugural USGA event (doesn't happen every Dyngus Day, you know) let the USGA know that it is available for the occasional biggie, and perhaps take a larger event down the road, like a Women's Open.

I don't know that many CGC members, but I can't imagine anything larger than this at Chicago Golf. The Walker Cup drew 5,000 and that was a much larger gallery than was expected.

CGC is a founding member of the USGA and obviously has a great relationship with everybody in Far Hills.  It is also a great supporter of amateur golf, as reflected by their hosting a number of USGA championships.  I also get the sense that the leadership of the club likes the idea of remaining relevant in terms of hosting championships despite the fact that the course is not really difficult enough for stroke play by the best in the game.  All of these factors makes it unsurprising that CGC would be interested in hosting this new championship.

Perfect match play course.  That Walker Cup was absolutely thrilling, Jeff Overton making a putt on 18 in the final match to win.  The distance will be just right for the Senior Ladies.  US Open or Amateur?  Not going to happen.

Agreed, it's been discussed on another thread but worth repeating that there are always quite a few short/family courses that run the gamut from good to legendary in the USGA Junior, Senior and Women's schedule, taking a peek is always fun.  Not perfect but I do like that about the USGA.
