Jason,

That's much too sensible of an approach.

First of all, My friend and I want to thank everyone for their replies, both on this thread and privately.  At this point, I want to bump this thread back to the top and see if there are any other thoughts.  Your thoughts have been helpful and most appreciated.

A couple of things not I believe yet mentioned but one's I'd want to check on -

Have someone with appropriate knowledge play the shortlisted applicants course and check on the quality of the different swards, not just 'checked' by some well meaning but non-agronomy knowledgable committee member either but by someone with genuine agronomy skills, even an outsider if necessary.

Undertake a detailed review of the maintenance compound/sheds and equipment and materials/fluids etc etc storage/disposal/cleaning areas plus relevant paperwork and record keeping practices. Are the premises/equipment etc kept clean and tidy and are good housekeeping practices undertaken or not and is all relevant paperwork etc and record keeping kept up to date?
