Is it just me or do other people have some of Malcolm's photos coming up as minimal impressionist drawings?

Thanks for the Askernish travel and accommodation tips.

There are a couple of other courses, of the 'rural'/'fun' variety I believe, in the area as well. Benbecula, by the nearest airport, plus the likes of Harris and Barra getable to via apparently short ferry rides. Would they (or some of them) be worth incorporating into an Askernish trip? Anyone played them?

Thomas,

it depends what you are looking for. Barra is a real throw back links course that is short but very challenging and in a spectacular setting. It asks a lot of questions of the golfer and is definitely best played as a matchplay or bogey competition. I absolutely loved playing there but then it is just the sort of course I like. If you go to Askernish then Barra is a must see. Sorry, I have not played Harris.

Boony has played Scarista (Harris). I haven't, but I've been by. Glorious spot, not big dunes, but low profile, end of the world style links. Worth a look

I just posted on another thread about not thinking that golf courses overall seemed to look all that natural to me, but that was before I looked at these pictures !  I wonder if this course was abandoned, how long it would take before no one could tell that there'd ever been one there..........it's just a hint, a sliver away from just being a natural spot.

Thanks much for the pictures. I've added Askernish to the Bucket List !

Thanks Jon and Adam.

'Throw-back' and 'end of the world', sound fine by me. Hickory time maybe.

I googled them both -

Harris GC - http://www.harrisgolf.com/ - aka Scarista

Barra GC - http://www.isleofbarra.com/golf.htm - the Isle of Barra, where the beach is the airport runway!

plus there's Benbecula GC - http://www.benbeculagolfclub.co.uk/ - where the course is immediately adjacent to the airport

Kirk,

The golf course was abandoned at Askernish. Originally an Old Tom Morris layout it went fallow between WW1 and WW2.

It was resurrected in 2008. All the Architects did was figure out the old routing, natural green sites and tees and then mow grass.

See the web site for their story!

I visited in 2000 on my motorbike with no clubs and all I recall was fields (fairways) and perhaps a flag or 2. Not a soul in sight and no indication of where to hire a set of clubs. Very remote wild and beautiful. Would love to return, and with clubs! Course now looks stunning!

Adam,
Afraid I haven't, but like you I have driven by and thought it looked a great place for a round.
Barra is also of interest.
Benbecula however looked rather flat and dull, again based on driving by and not an actual game.

Is it just me or do other people have some of Malcolm's photos coming up as minimal impressionist drawings?

Jon,I have impressionist paintings as well...  ???

I could have sworn you posted about playing there on a thread about a swing through the islands, maybe two or three years ago! Ah well.
