All of the guys pining for "proper" tees probably won't like the new course at Forest Dunes ... MOST of our tees are just built and mowed as a part of the fairway.

That's the look I'd prefer. I agree with Archie that a series of four, five or six specific teeing areas is visual clutter. I loved the look of some of the tees at Pacific Dunes and Old MacDonald, where tee markers appeared to be casually dropped into the fairway as the mowers went by.

I am all for the look below, but it usually looks far better when tied into the aprons of the previous green (like below).  I also don't mind some raised tees to avoid drainage issues.  To me, the main reasons for different tees are

-different angles
-less /no carry tee shot
-way forward tees for youngsters

Of course, if they do build those forward tees (and BTW, I would object to the forward-forward tee name, its really just putting them where they should be, with thought) it occurs they should design them for what those players want, not to satisfy all of you who won't be playing them.......

And, from everything I hear, they prefer a formal tee, even if it means visual clutter for the further back tees.  Of course, a suitably creative architect can figure out how to reduce that clutter if it is totally abhorrent to back tee players, I suspect.

If forward-forward tees are helping to get young juniors into the game and helping seniors to continue playing thats fine by me. Looking forward to playing from them myself one day (with young grandchildren would be nice). And is a walk-forward any worse than a walk-back?
