Can't speak to the special rub, but heard he took a ranger ride right before #10 was built.  ;)

Despite having made two tap-in birdies in one day on Doak No. 3, when it counted (!), the par-3s I think most about at Dismal River are Red Nos. 11 and 5, White Nos. 15 and 5.

EASILY my least favorite is White No. 10, which just seems goofy -- though I would probably love it if the bunker were removed and the dividing ridges were flattened.

# 5 Red--Fits my eye and is a perfect 3 wood distance for me! Not your typical par three and that may be why I love it so much!
#5 White--I probably like it because I heard Tiger did not!
# 16 Red--a great par three between three great holes in 15, 17 and 18 and I came one ball turn from acing it this year at the 5th Major so since I was close I like it even more!!
#15 White--great layout with the long trap down the left side.  Play it from the front tees sometime if you have not before.  An awesome elevated tee shot from 102 yards!
#11 Red-- I love this green complex--especially the right side.
#3 White-- a breath of fresh air after #2 but still comes with its challenges!
[/size]#3 Red--not a bad hole at all just so dang many good ones ahead of it IMO!
#10 White--I feel the green has way to much contour to it.  I don't mind the trap personally but I feel the green is a bit of a circus ride.  #17 at nearby Bayside has a trap in the middle of the green as well but the green itself is a more fair test of golf.

I agree with what John said about #8 White and having to make three--compares to #5 Red in feel and play! #8 may be my favorite hole on the White course!

5. White 10, front pin locations. The closest I have ever come to an ace. On several occasions.

I saw you birdie this hole this year from inside two feet and it appeared from the tee it may go in for a while!!

8.  Red #3.  I wish the giant bunker right were as beautiful as it could be.  One hell of a hole to be my least favorite.

I have said numerous times, I think the tee shifted on Red #3. When we walked it with Tom Doak while the course was being built, the bunker on the right put the fear of God in me. Now, not so much. We need a "Heaven or Hell" tee way right, where you have to come in over that beast.

I agree, I remember that bunker on #3 being a bit worrisome (which is saying something since the only time I miss right is when I'm scared of missing left) when we were walking it during construction a few years ago, but it turns out to be nothing of the sort. The back tee should be 15-20 yards right, where I'm pretty sure I thought it was going to be. I also remember something about a back tee up the hill on 16 - if there's one hole that could benefit from a bit of a drop shot to capitalize on the amazing vista in the background, its that one.

Of course, the great thing about the Doak is that so long as there is a mowed area, you can play it from pretty much anywhere you want. Easy enough to play #3 from further right, and while there's no mowed area with a 180 tee up that hill, it would be dynamite from the mowed area behind the 15th green.

4.  White #10.  So many options, so little time.  I'm starting to like the back pin and have only hit in the bunker in the middle of the green once.  The time I played when there wasn't a hole cut in the green.  It's Dismal White at it's finest.

Totally fits Dismal White. The fact it is on a Nicklaus course just makes it better, because it breaks any remaining preconceptions people may have left after seeing the front nine.

5.  Red #16.  The view of the ball cascading down the Buffalo Run is an iconic moment in every Dismalites day.  Love the odd ball bunker long left.  Can't wait to find it someday.  Also one of very few examples of a Doak backstop, they never disappoint.

You mean that damn bunker I seem to find every other time I play the hole? Nothing like playing from a plugged lie with 40 feet of room until you hit jungle!!

7.  White #15.  I play it like some idiot who thinks it's a redan.

Well there's your problem. Take it from me, you aim it straight at the hole, and it goes in, or at least that's how it worked for me once. Easiest hole on the course.

My ranking would be:
White 5 - especially from the back tees, now that's a scary shot when the wind is blowing!
Red 16 - I'd rank it high for the backdrop alone, but it is also the perfect hole for that particular point in the round
White 10 - I don't care if Doak doesn't like it, I think I love it more the more I hear people hating on it. Still think we need to go back to having three flags on the hole for the 5th Major - c'mon Eric, don't give in the purists who think having three holes is somehow against the rules of golf. It's your tournament, you make the rules! Hell, go all the way and make the rule that your opponent chooses the hole you play to after you've hit your tee shot and make it really interesting...
Red 11 - if only I could not hit it in the hollow when the pin is back, and hit it over the back of the green when the pin is in the hollow...
White 15 - while I did ace it, so you'd think I'd rank it higher, I guess I don't think it is Redan enough. Maybe cut the rough further up the hill to 1) make it more tempting to play it that way and 2) laugh as people who hit it too high up on the hill go all the way across the green and down the hill on the left
Red 3 - if the tee was further right I'd rank it higher
Red 5 - normally I love long par 3s, but this one is just a little plain...not sure what it needs, but it needs something.
White 3 - meh

As for the honorable mention 8th on the White, am I the only one who sees that as kind of a Redan? I always play short right of the green off that little mound - you can't really play a draw off the hillside unless you want to end up in the bunker but you damn well can play one off the mound (though its blind, so you have to play it enough to trust it is there) Less chance of hitting somewhere terrible if you're playing short - the bunkers short left are manageable and the green slopes leave you with lots of options to get close to just about any pin. The bunkers pin high or long left, on the other hand, are significantly more difficult.
