Greens built in ridge faces
« on: September 28, 2015, 08:52:24 PM »
Any examples?  I can only think of at the base like #10 at Inverness.  A punch bowl.  Any greens build using the ridge in some form?

Not quite sure what you mean but 6 at Royal Dornoch seems to fit the description.

Ben,

Given I think of a ridge as something having a slope higher than allowed for a green, are you thinking of a green at the top of the ridge with a lip partially down a ridge or at the bottom of a ridge with a lip partially going up?

Ben...at Diamante Dunes:

1) pushed the top of the ridge out to create green site in the new face
3 ) pushed the ridge both ways to create a saddle site for the green
4) wallowed out the side of the ridge for the green site
5) created a ridge to build a green in the face of  :)
9) benched in a green in the face of a perpendicular ridge
11) set greensite on top of the highest ridge on the property
12) benched in a green on the side of the ridge face
13) created a punchbowl greensite using the side face of a ridge
14) pushed half of the dune face out to create a green site
17) benched in the green site halfway up the dune face

As Tom Doak noted on a site visit during construction...we have a bold dune system with not quite a fairway width in between ridges. As such tee and green sites tend to ricochet in certain situations.

Its fortunate that I have been here the past 2+ years to create 3 new holes which have replaced 3 others held in low esteem.
They now reside at the top of the class. Never before have we had the opportunity for redo/improvements.

I've always envied DR and his relationship with PH#2...design mulligans are great!

Poppy Ridge (Livermore, CA) is a 27-hole complex designed by Rees Jones (and owned by the NCGA) that opened in 1996. The property sits on a number of ridges and the valleys between them. The greens tend to be set either into the ridges, on top of the ridges or in the bowls between the ridges.
