If scores are only recorded for tournament rounds, how does one go about establishing a handicap reflective of one's ability for the purpose of having equitable matches with friends, acquaintances and strangers ?

How is it possible to establish a handicap to be applied universally, from a very limited number of rounds ?

It seems to work, and at least with someone else marking your card under competition you can't cheat!

I think Rich Goodale, Tom Paul and Tom Huckaby have debated this at length on GCA.  They didn't reach a consensus.  But I agree with Rich-who supports the UK system-that a handicap in the UK is more consistent than here in the US.  I've played with a lot of "6 handicappers" here and the difference can be staggering! (but in my experience, it's usually form a real "6" to a real "14" so it isn't cheating, just ego)

I will say this from experience, a misquote in the national press is very very upsetting.....and there's not a damn thing that you can do about it.
