Many thanks for posting this link Adam. It looks a total wow.

Any tips from those who've been there or have researched a trip for the best/easiest/most sensible/most cost effective ways of getting to-from Askernish-Uist?

From what I've been able to ascertain it seems like flights are from Glasgow, although there might be an Inverness flight as well?

Thanks Adam,

Thomas,

The best bet is to make a week of it at least, travel up Skye, get the ferry to Harris and Lewis, the make your way down to North Uist, Benbecula and finally South Uist. Take in the sites, the history, culture, wildlife and food of the Western Isles and finish it off with a round at Askernish before getting the ferry back to Oban and home. Thats the way I did it and my wife (a none golfer) and I did it and loved it. Dont just rush up there to play golf and back. Take your time, you will thank me for it  ;D

As an alternative I'm planning on being on Skye at some point next year and doing Askernish as a day trip. All being well I will report back accordingly...

Cheers,

James

Boony has given you the romantic option: the quick way is the Glasgow-Benbecula flight. You can arrange for a rental car at Benbecula airport. Alternatively, the other adventurous choice is to fly to Barra and experience the famous beach landing, the only one in the world. There's then a short ferry crossing to Eriskay (setting of Whisky Galore) which is linked to Uist by causeway.

Is it possible to get to, play, and return from Askernish to Glasgow in a single day?

There are two flights each way per day, so it might be possible, but iirc the afternoon flight goes quite early. So I think it would be tight.

Adam,

I was going to mention the Barra flight option but thought a beach landing and whisky galore was a bit too much of a "romantic" option?  ;D

Chris

Why the bummer about a day trip?

Go and stay at the Polochar Inn, about 15 minutes from the course.

Lovely pub with great food.

Tentative plans call for me to be there next May at the conclusion of a two or three week sojourn up through the Western Isles hitting most of the courses, storied and otherwise, and a few of the single malts along the way (my own version of Whisky Galore).  This film has a Pavlovian effect on the Wandering Golfer.

I think I'll do a series of ferries rather than the beach landing on Barra, although that might make for a nice adventure later on.
