Work Progressing at The Machrie; Holes to Open in 2014
« on: September 13, 2013, 02:14:02 PM »
Back from a summer in Campbeltown, Scotland and had the chance to play The Machrie Golf Links twice. Head greenkeeper Simon Freeman is growing in a new green site and approach and one new hole as part of the RAW Golf Course Design work.

Anthony

It's great to hear that something's being done to replace the par three 10th, the weakest hole on The Machrie course.

Here's a snap of what it currently looks like (I've never liked the wee burn that winds round the front of the green):

Yes Jim, not only was the 10th weak but also the 11th, a late bending dog leg that had internal out of bounds on the right hand side to hinder golfers taking an alternative and shorter route down the 13th. The main problem being, when playing the 13th, the out of bounds was very close when the ball was pushed.

When I played there one of my playing partners (Handicap 7) managed to clock up a 15!!! with a one putt on the green after being level Par for the first 9 . The best taste of Schadenfreude I've ever had. :).

The 10th really sticks out as soon as you sit, does not fit in. The internal out of bounds and the sharp dogleg are awful. Glad to see they will all be eliminated.

Machrie is definitely on the itinerary when I journey back to Scotland, hopefully in 2016. I'm a little confused though by what little I've read about the changes being made to the course.

Anthony's article mentions changes at holes 2, 10 and 11. Then seeing today's post on the Machrie's FB page they are rerouting holes 8 and 9. You can see a few pics of the progress here.

Are these the same holes Anthony mentions, only renumbered, or are these changes in addition to them?

View of the approach to the new 2nd green, the burn is definitely now in play, some great contours around the green
