Shoulders into greens

When did it become common place for mounds and bunkers surrounds to bleed shoulders and ridges into the putting surface and who was/were the first architects to deliberately use this method in their designs/construction and where?

IMHO if you study William Flynn greens and Dick Wilson greens they will all consist of three mounds that tie in from outside the greens...not sure where it started...

Assuming I understand you, I believe that many Donald Ross/Walter Hatch greens fit the description.

The punchbowl at Blue Mound's 8th has two subtle parallel shoulders from opposite directions:  one from approximately 2 o'clock toward 8 o'clock and a second from approximately 7 o'clock down toward 3 o'clock.  Very cool.

I would guess that many old courses' greens were set up as an extension of the fairways and surrounding landforms.  I've played a few links courses where you would aim off the green to have sideslopes direct the ball onto the green.

Doesn't this happen at TOC?  So it has been around as long as golf itself.

When did 'natural' lay of the land type shoulders flowing into putting surfaces first start to be deliberately copied and by whom?
Who noticed this was an interesting feature to include and when? Before or after OTM and his era? After the square greens period?

For sure Colt was doing this early on. I think in a more obvious manner Raynor was very big on shoulders from either side of greens meeting to form ridges and false fronts.

I can't write about other parts if the world but Colt was also my first thought but others know more than me hence the query. Anyone use this method before HSC?
