Larger Golf Hole for Temporary Greens?
« on: May 05, 2014, 02:21:03 PM »
I have been hearing discussions about increasing the size of the golf hole...

Someone at my club recommended we do that while we resurface our greens and have to play on temporary greens and then go back to the normal size hole when the greens are completed.

I think larger holes are great to get kids playing, I would love to have 3-6 extra holes for my kids to play golf on at my home club.

Thoughts?

I think a lot of club are going to try this as an experiment.  Possibly for a weekend tournament or on selected days.

It probably a good idea on temp greens considering the condition is not the best.  I played last year at Pebble Beach when they had a temp green on the 9th and even with the effort they put into trying to make it puttable, it wasn't very good.

Not sure how the handicap system would work with the larger holes.

We usually play automatic 2-putt on temp greens. Maybe we will putt out if cup is big enough.

If the greens are in bad enough shape, whether they be temporary or just recently aerated, I'd be fine with slightly bigger holes. But no more than 1.5 or 2 inches. The point shouldn't be to make more putts go in than normal. It should be to try to mitigate the disruption and get things as close to normal as possible. I like that idea a lot more than extending the concession range.

I've seen the larger hole on temps thong quite a lot in the UK. My Dad's club in Yorkshire used to do it every winter. They weren't 15 inches, mind...
