The fellow who invented GolfCross, Burton Silver, flew in to Bandon when we were building Pacific Dunes, specifically to see if he could get me to sign on to adapting and promoting the game. He was a fascinating guy ... a cartoonist and satirist with a degree in philosophy, who came up with the idea as satire, but then as he developed it came to believe that it might actually work.
The appeal of it was that you could play it anywhere, for cheap, since its "goals" eliminated the need for the one thing that makes golf expensive ... closely mowed turf. It had never really occurred to me before that, except for greens maintenance, golf would be quite inexpensive.
As interesting as it was, I explained that the "regular golf" course we were building was probably going to be quite a big deal, and jump-start my career, so I didn't want to jeopardize that for GolfCross. But, I was sorry to see it flounder.
