Myopia Hunt Club....South Hamilton, Mass......
« on: June 09, 2003, 09:20:45 PM »
Just returned from my bi-yearly visit to the states of CT and MA where I played once again at the famed and oft' forgotten Myopia Hunt Club in So. Hamilton, MA......this course is truly a remarkable layout, one that with a bit more conditioning would be one of the premier "old style" architecture gems in the eastern US....have any of you had the chance to play here??

This course did hold 4 of the first 10 US Opens.......some of the holes are just spectacular....more cross bunkers than just about any US course I know.....extraordinary green complexes......challenging par 3's.....some great short par 4's....and some real long ones too!!! Tough course to learn....don't let the yardage  fool you....I am a scratch golfer and I dare to say that anyone in the same league would sniff par the first 3 times they played there.

There are many stories about Myopia that I hold near and dear..this place is very hard to get on and a must play for anyone with the opportunity to do so......there is a bunker renovation project that is supposed to take place later this year.......give me some feedback.....I know all of the holes like the back of my hand!!!!

I too share the affection for Myopia.  Sometimes eccentric, plenty of character and charm, and has a number of plain fantastic holes.

BTW - I will be back on the North Shore of Massachusetts from 7/2 - 7/13 on vacation. If anyone's up for a game, just let me know?

Myopia Hunt Club used to be the home course of the Harvard golf team.  I understand that that is no longer true--too bad.  Great course--I remember specifically the very small greens, which required great approach shots.

Great place.  One of the last great courses with screen doors on the clubhouse.  What is the unique short hole?  8th or 9th.  Bunkering like that I have never seen anywhere else.  I think Doak calls the 4th (?) dogleg left "one of the great par 4's in the Western word."

It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

What makes a wonderful golf course? How about one you have not played in 20 years but you still think about the uniqueness of some of its holes--2 in particular--the short par 4 with a turtleback green---making sure to layback enough to hit a high shot in that can hold.----the DOWNHILL  par 3 with a green THAT SLOPES FROM FRONT TO BACK!!! Where do i land the ball?
I also loved the spotty rough with the sand that had little islands of grass. My ball would roll in between these islands and hitting the ball was my only hope.
I guess we call this "quirk".
These holes probably stand out because of the "framing " of them by the other holes.I guess i am a sucker for variety.

Simply one of the best.  What else is there to say.
Cheers,

Jim_H...
Yeah - the Harvard guys no longer practice at Myopia. They have to go slum it over at TCC.  ;)

When did this change?  Thought it had been The Country Club for a while.

I count myself fortunate as having the opportunity to play Myopia frequently.

A great golf course and a fun membership. North Shore at it's best!

Mayday remembers the 16th par three downhill where the green slopes dramatically from front to back but the course has many, many other memorable holes.

Also of interest is the maintenance shed which was originally built as a court tennis arena and still has the slate walls and skylights.

Speaking of court tennis....one of the best amateur golfers of that early era, Quincy Adams Shaw, a contemporary of Leeds, won the US Open in court tennis, twice, and also the big event in Newport, and competed in England in their equivalent of the tennis open. He also built the fabulous Cedar Banks golf course near Eastham, one of the great courses in America at the time it was built. I was on the Cape last week and did a little poking around at the National Seashore, and found a couple of holes from that long lost golf course.

One of the big mysteries is who designed Cedar Banks, did Shaw design it himself or did he have help?
