Re: What does Furyk's 59 say about Conway's architecture?

Bottom line, the architecture is basically irrelevant in considering a low score versus a high score in a pro tournament, especially on such a bland, patched-together sleeper of a course. The players are like machines playing in a green factory this week, just like so many other weeks. And when they played on a course with great architecture, they twisted and transmogrified it so as to effectively neutralize it.  Different game occasionally played in the same park.

Now we just need to get the other 99 percent of golfers to agree with us wingnuts.  :P

Neither was Merion, in many respects.

Terry,       Nice to see on TV you were one of the first to shake Furyk's hand after he holed out for 59. Hard to believe its been 10 yrs since his Open win at OFCC. Looking forward to Cherry Hills next year and see how it withstands the modern pro game. Hats off To Furyk- it is more good PR for the BMW.

Some thoughts from Grantland's Bill Barnwell on how Furyk's 59 rates among the "best" rounds ever shot (and some interesting comments at the end of the story re. strength of field): http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/74665/where-does-jim-furyks-59-rank

Pretty good article
Geiberger's 59 occurred on bermuda greens, in the summer (not overseeded as they would be in winter, and much more suceptible to grain) on a tough, long (for that time) golf course
I think he won the event at 13 under also
