Golf courses and war

Bob Crosby - basically Deal and Sandwich were "officers clubs" and Princes wasn't therefore a little influence helped save the courses.

Craig - I've always thought the gun emplacement at Rye looks a little crude in construction compared to the hexagonal shaped ones you see littering the countryside. I'm hoping the one at Deal will be restored by the club as its a little piece of history.

A few years ago I remember Whitten had an article about golf courses and war, I think he had a list of courses in America that are built on or around battlefields.

Sean and I had a chat about the one at Deal - after he had whacked it with his drive and second shot (and still won the hole) - and wondered if it was vintage WWI or II. It seems to have been constructed with more craftsmanship than the one at Rye which looks like nothing more than a few slabs of pre-set concrete. The brick facade and smaller gun ports led us to think that it was WWI.
