WAY OT Just feel dumb, scared, and violated

While I was logged onto my ipad I got a message that it was locked because of suspicious activity. Call this number. I NEVER do that and always check with my son before I would think of doing it. Except today. It was a mess. After hours of being on the phone with bank, Apple support etc it is all figured out and everything is safe. I hate it that I can't trust. It is my nature to think the best of folks. To think that I could have endangered our bank, credit cards, market, etc makes me shiver.

No didn't accuse me of anything, just to call because of suspicious activity.

I always cover my camera so when they tell be they have video of what I didn't do I can sleep at night. It's always funny when they say they will send pictures to all your contacts. The contacts should be paying not to see those pics.

I'm more interested how this popped up on an Apple device.  They are pretty solid and very well defended as a platform.  Perhaps you were visiting a website when this popped this up?  I always ignore them and immediately close the browser and clear the cached files/data settings to be safe.

In general, phishing attempts via email or text are still the most effective way hackers compromise accounts/machines.

It could just have been a web page putting up a dialog box. You can still get those occasionally.

Sometimes a nefarious actor will sneak a nefarious ad into an ad network that redirects you to a site that puts up a dialog box, too.

Tommy: The best thing you said was you usually check with your son. We all need checks and balances. If it even sounds suspicious or just is not a regular email, etc. ask someone you trust. These guys are good. I have had a few family friends give away their retirement savings so this is a fresh issue.

It may seem counter-intuitive, but being suspicious of everyone from a security perspective is not just preferred anymore, its necessary.  And this goes especially towards your co-workers, as this is the number 1 way companies are compromised...from within.

In my current position, I'm tested regularly (10+ times per year) with bogus phone calls, texts, and emails to make sure I'm being careful with various requests/inquiries, in addition to spend 3-4 hours per month on security-specific training.
