Palmetto Golf Club's Tom Moore Retires
« on: December 30, 2012, 05:30:42 PM »
Thought the members and fans of Palmetto that frequent here might be interested in an article in today's Augusta Chronicle about long time pro Tom Moore retiring from the club after thirty plus years.  Mr. Moore is very well respected and as nice of a guy as you could meet, best wishes to him in the future.

The starter at Streamsong is a Palmetto member and mentioned this to us. He agreed with me that Tom may be "retired" but he will still be around for sure.

Good for Tom, I hope.  I'm sure he will still hang around Palmetto, though.

Seems like the end of an era for me.  There are only a handful of the golf professionals left now who were at the same clubs when I was traveling around to see all of these courses in the 1980's.  Indeed, all of the ones I thought of first have retired, apart from Fred Muller at Crystal Downs.

If Tom Moore was the young man who took my green fee at Palmetto in 1981, he sure made a lasting (good) impression - as did the golf course. Of course, I was young myself back then, too!

I have only played PGC a few times but it is clear that Tom loved his club and members.  When the clubhouse was undergoing a much needed overhaul he showed me very screw and nail.  He couldn't have more gracious to me.  I am glad to have met him.

Thanks for sharing this Mark. I began playing Palmetto in 1981in tne Southern Cross high school tournament and it really has evolved positively.
Tom is a great gentleman and chose well in Brooks.

For those that havent played you really should make the effort.  Such a fun course.  Its challenges are unlike any other place i have ever played.
If you sync up with the course and can hit good iron shots you can play well.  Most days though bogeys abound as the course will not tolerate Sloppy approaches and less than excellent greenside recovery play.

Tom Doak -

At the risk of going off-topic, you know you are getting old when you are taking golf lessons from the son of the pro who used to give you golf lessons. ;)

Tom took an interest in me as a junior player when he was an assistant at West Lake CC and Augusta CC.
I have yet to meet a more dedicated professional.

Like John Shimp, I had been fortunate enough to have discovered Palmetto in the 70's during the Southern Cross High School Tournament. It ,along with Aiken Golf Club, became  favorites of mine at a time when the two courses were not in favor in the area.
Later , when Tom got the job at Palmetto, he allowed myself and many other aspiring professionals/amateurs carte blanche at the club, and eventually with his help, I joined Palmetto.
There were always good players around at Palmetto (both members and nonmembers) and finding a game is easy, thanks to the efforts of Tom and the culture of the club.

I cannot think of a time when Tom has not greeted me and/or my guests upon arrival at the club, as well as after the round.
I have on more than one occasion mentioned to Tom that he makes the rest of us golf professionals look bad ;) ;D

I used to play quite a bit of golf with Tom before he simply stopped playing.
I hope to get the opportunity in the very near future.
It will be interesting to see what he does with his time.

Fortunately Palmetto has chosen an excellent successor in Brooks Blackburn; however, Tom will be missed.

Excellent post Jeff.  Though it's not news to you, but I love Palmetto as much as anywhere else in golf.  Tom is part of that culture.

Mr. Moore is a true gentleman. I wish him the best.

As an aside, I read on PGATour.com, that the Web.com winner last weekend, Kevin Kisner and the tour winner last week in Puerto Rico, Scott Brown, are BOTH members at Palmetto. Congratulations.

Its a great place to get the game ready for the big time even at 6600 yds.

Just completed the Palmetto Inv Collegiate.  4 players under par of 18 teams with the winning score -4.  Winning team was 2x National Champion Augusta St at +16 with USC, Clemson, UVA, NCSU, and others trailing.

Palmetto is in good hands even after Tom's retirement.

I echo Bruce’s comments on Tom. A true Southern gentleman. Wish him the best. Palmetto is an incredible experience and excellent course. Tom certainly added to the whole experience.
