Andover CC in MA; Ross or Follett?
« on: July 06, 2003, 09:44:05 AM »
I'm playing Andover Country Club in Andover, MA tomorrow morning.

Their web site says "Our 18-hole golf course was designed by the renowned architect Donald Ross and is recognized as one of New England's finest courses."

On GolfCourse.com, the architect is listed as W. H. "Pipe" Follett.

Does anybody have any info on this?

My understanding was that Andover was designed by Donald Ross.  I do not know where the reference to Follett comes from.
My guess is you'll find out tomorrow.
Best,
Dave

After much research on the part of many people, Andover CC is NOT a Ross course.

I'm no expert, but it didn't feel like a Donald Ross course to me.  There were no crowned greens, no fairway bunkers worth mentioning, and no optical-illusion bunkers short of the green.

Is any of the "research on the part of many people" available?

Thanks.

Just wanted to bring this back to the front and see if anyone has any info regarding Ross's involvement at Andover.  I was always told Ross had a hand in some part, but couldn't believe he "designed" the course.

Acording to GolfCourse.com, there is course called North Andover Country Club.  It is a 9-hole course credited to Donald Ross in 1920.

This course may confuse the casual observer about Ross, but there's no way that Andover CC is confused about it.  My guess is that the oral history of the club said that Ross designed it, but that recent research (referred to by Michael J. Fay here) indicates that it didn't happen.

Now what are the odds that Andover CC will stop marketing itself as a Ross course?

Golfcourse.com also lists the designer of Ravisloe CC near Chicago as Ted Moreau, there is little doubt that the real designer was Donald Ross.  Oops.  Brad Klein has interesting tidbits about the course in his book, including old and newer photos, and it is undergoing a restoration by David Esler, which I hear is terrific.
