Some UK golf holes for you to recognise 1
« on: August 28, 2012, 12:41:45 PM »
I found a mystery file on my Mac, which turns out to have been old 35mm golf transparencies taken between the 1960s and early 1990s. They had been transferred from an old Microsoft computer and many of their titles were missing. I’ve had a go at guessing which courses these might be, but some I am still unsure of.  The quality is pretty awful. These are all UK courses and these are all 1st holes. Would you like the fun of guessing with me?

A

B

C

A, B and C are all on the same course.

D.

1st tee and 18th green in close proximity.

E

F

An unforgettable opening hole!

G

Longish one-shotter on a most attractive course that I have not seen featured on GCA.

H

Dr Mac had a go at this old club, but Braid was later brought in to undo the most severe of his work.

I

This course has featured in a recent GCA thread.

J

A most attractive course which had a distinguished former captain (known for something other than golf.

K

This one still has me foxed.  I ought to recognise it from that hedge, but I don’t.

L

A modern-ish course of three nines. I don’t remember which nine this one comes from.

M

A fun course in glorious scenery with great views in good weather.

Mark,

D is Hunstanton.

J resembles West Hill but I don't believe it is...and K could be Addington but again, it is not...

I'm afraid I'm struggling for most but suggest F might be 17th at Cleeve Cloud ?

F Looks like Southerndown, but something looks amiss.  I guess that would make E S'down as well if I am right.

I looks like Sherwood Forest, but the house doesn't look right.

Sean

I bow to your superior knowledge. In fairmess, the day I played Cleeve Cloud I was suffering from a bout of vertigo so was reluctant to raise my head too much but that view in F does remind me of that course.

Mark - I can't help at all, but wanted to say: please don't describe the picture quality as 'pretty awful'. On the contrary, it was so refreshing for me (and I'd bet for many others) to see once again that wonderfully grainy/washed-out look of actual 35 mm prints instead of the pristine/lifeless/artificially perfect look of digital. Especially with these old British courses, the naturalness and understated patina of film caputres the 'truth' of the architecture much better than does the neon brightness of computer enhanced postcards. Sure, some photos are better than others, but on this thread and there other two, there are seveal (many) gems, just perfect pictures (for my tastes).

I'm going to go with The Wisley for L.

Mark,

Following on from others I have D as Hunstanton, and yes Sean pretty certain I is Sherwood Forest.

E and F look like Clyne to me???
(Edit: Just checked my pictures and its not Clyne so I'll bow down to those that say its Southerndown!)  ;D

Cheers,

James

E is definitely 2nd at Southerndown.  F is the 1st.

Hunstanton and Sherwood Forest are correct. The clubhouse may well have been altered since this picture was taken.
E and F are indeed Southerndown, but I think they're both shots of the first from different angles. The second hole appears on the 2nd hole thread!
Tom, you are spot on, that is the Wisley.

You can expect that some of these courses will reappear - you don't just take one photograph when you play a course, but in the days of 35mm you took far fewer. Besides, GCA website hadn't been invented and we didn't realise the potential of course photo tours. And in one or two cases the clouds opened and only one or two pictures were possible.

Peter, I take your point and won't apologise any more!

A, B and C are not Halifax. There will be further pictures from this course in time.

Mark - J is no. 1 at Crowborough Beacon - with the super-tough 18th going back up the hill on the left

Is K Longcliffe?

They have cleared the trees and gorse etc from in front of the clubhouse at Sherwood since that picture was taken and the locker rooms at right hand side of the clubhouse which is obscured from view have also been rebuilt fairly recently.

Tom, K isn't Longcliffe simply because I haven't been there, but I'm still none the wiser about where it is! Lots of these pictures will be well out of date - some of them are getting on for 40 years old.

Here are the solutions to most of them.

A, B and C - Hartlepool - hardly the most helpful of pictures!
D Hunstanton
E, F Southerndown
G Thetford
H Bramall Park
I Sherwood Forest
J Crowborough Beacon
K Still defeats me!
L The Wisley - can't remember which nine this is
M Llanymynech

We may get K from a later slide.
