English links eclectic
« on: August 15, 2012, 01:03:23 PM »
Torrential rain prevented our playing a family fourball today, so I gave thought to assembling an eclectic course derived from English links courses.

My rules:

1. England only, no Scotland, Wales, Ireland or even the Channel Islands or Isle of Man.
2. Holes must occupy the place on the course they do for normal member play (relevant to Hoylake, for instance).
3. This course must be suitable for match play, so there must be the right balance between long and short holes occupying odd and even numbers.
4. The wind must be tackled from each angle. Assume the prevailing wind is from the south west.
5. Not more than one hole from any course.

1. 427 yards par 4 Royal Liverpool (south west)
2. 163 yards par 3 Berwick upon Tweed (Goswick) (north west)
3. 373 yards par 4 Wallasey (south west)
4. 495 yards par 4 Royal St George's (south east)
5. 168 yards par 3 Rye (north west)
6. 336 yards par 4 Hunstanton (south east)
7. 377 yards par 4 Formby (east)
8. 494 yards par 5 Royal West Norfolk (north east)
9. 497 yards par 5 Royal North Devon (south)

10. 457 yards par 4 St Enodoc (north east)
11. 484 yards par 5 Seaton Carew Brabazon Course (north west)
12. 464 yards par 4 Trevose (south)
13. 341 yards par 4 Hayling (north west)
14. 192 yards par 3 Burnham and Berrow (south)
15. 464 yards par 4 Royal Lytham (south west)
16. 508 yards par 5 Royal Cinque Ports (south east)
17. 182 yards par 3 Littlestone (north west)
18. 408 yards par 4 Saunton East Course (north)

Out: 3330 yards par 36
In: 3500 yards par36
Total 6830 yards par 72.

Obvious faults include, three short holes playing in the same direction, three shortish par fives close together, no properly short par three, no really long one, but it'll give you something to work with. Obvious omissions Silloth, Royal Birkdale. I'll ensure that the yellow tee markers are set about 6300 yards maximum length for those of us entitled to our bus passes. Have fun!

My experience of English links consists entirely of Silloth so you can take my post as being merely a bump. That said, I notice that one of your par 4's is longer than two of your par 5's and that you've got several short par 4's which I always like to see. I look forward to seeing what the more experienced than me have got to say.

Cheers

Immediate personal additions/changes would be numbers 6 and 12 at Royal Birkdale, and a par three at Sheringham on the back nine who's number I cannot remember.
Number 17 at Lytham would also have to be in any eclectic of mine. But a very nice looking eclectic Mark.

I have to say I would have the 1st at Birkdale instead of Hoylake.

I like your inclusion of Hunstanton's 6th & St Enodoc's 10th.

4. St Enodoc: (of course) Par 4 292 (left to right wind?)
