Perfectly Pukka Peebles
« on: July 12, 2012, 04:38:29 PM »
So this year's Golf Staycation took us to the wonderful Scottish Borders and Bonnie Peeblesshire. I played Peebles about twenty years ago on one of our now ledgendary (in our own opinion anyway) boys weekends. At the time, I was unaware of it's history and was too busy enjoying the booze, views and cigars to care!

Luckily, I'm way more enlightened now, so was looking forward to revisiting this H.S.Colt peach.

The Course layout reflects a quite hilly location. Colt cleverly takes you round the hill mostly with only occasional uphill/downhill holes to help alleviate the slopes:

She starts off with a nicely bunkered Par 3 played across the slope in front of the Pint Gallery:

I'm going to break these posts up as I can't review properly. What happened to that???

#3: A great hole with tempting drive which needs to be held back a wee bit to retain a view of the GREAT double Green:

More of this beauty later...

Then you wander (cart) through to a most marvellous vista:

Colt genius-ness of the bestest. Reminded me of Swinley a bit. Straight along the side of the hill, bunkered just where you'd try to squeak a wee saving shot, but not too much sidehill roll to be utterly painful.

I'm not that familiar with Colt, but that last photo just shouts "Colt!" to me.  Thinking of greens benched into hillsides at Rye and Burnham & Berrow.  Beautiful.

Wow, Martin ... I always had Peebles and Hawick on my list of courses to see someday, thanks to an obscure reference I read thirty years ago when I was living over there.  I didn't expect it to be stripe-mowed ... but I didn't expect it to have so many good-looking holes, either!

FBD,

Great stuff. Can't say I'd hear much about the course but looks fantastic. BTW I notice the rest of the boys stayed at home and you took the lovely Nancy instead, much better idea.

Cheers

Tom,
the stripe mowing gets ever more popular over here!!!
Niall,
twas a nice couples week with two of our good pals. Peebles then Barcelona!!!
Brian,
I think maybe all the sodding rain we've had has washed all the sand back into the bunkers! Although surprisingly, Peebles was decently dry  - especially compared to Cardrona which was water-logged by the Twees as high as I've ever seen it!

Anyheys,
on to the next few holes:

One of my absolute fave - the downhill 6th:
Tempting wide fairway with "da-da-da" OPTIONS!

Drive to the corner gives this lovely view:

Choice of whether to go for the green or lay-up due to the nice little stream

Close up of the green site - sorry about the pic (Nancy's wee camera). Just a brilliant, BRILLIANT green.

You'll guess I REALLY LOVED this hole.

Marty,
The Pentlands, in the background, are looking quite benign methinks.

This wee stream you talk of seems to have a very low profile and I guess that is it meandering between the stakes masquerading as Peebles' Swilcan Burn?

The course looks delightful. Perched greens! How much does a poor Aussiie (naturalised 72 hours ago!!) have tae shell out to grace it's fairways? I have never played it but one should as one drifts North out of the clutches of the Sassenachs.

Cheers Col

Pentlands and Moorfoots methinks...
Congrats on becoming 'official'!!
Peebles is ouotrageously expensive:

 ;D

Hole #7 is the first (SECOND - DOH!) of the par 3s. Played back to that double green.

Really good shaping. Swales and mounds merging simply perfectly. I like to think that the mound in front of this bunker was done deliberately to reflect the shape of yonder hill.

Martin,

Thanks for this little tour!  Great looking place.  #7 is the second par-3 right?  Great hole names!

Cheers

Interesting both flags on the double green are yellow?   What's up with that?

I have an unhappy memory of firing a wedge within five feet of the red flag on #3 on the New course at St Andrews, only to be told that we were playing to the yellow flag which was 100' way over there to the left!   What a stupido I am!

Scottish froogality at work, dearest Unc!!!  ;D

Next hole was the splendid downhill #8. Again, a tempting drive which caught me out both days as I over-estimated my golfing abilities and landed in the hazard each time... :'(

Approach to a nice world's end green:

View of #2 green from here shows the lovely subtle contouring employed at so many of PGC's greens:

Great memories.
