He'd absolutely contend, because his ball striking was pure, and he made clutch putts. Lots of clutch putts.

Considering just the ball Nicklaus played - forget about the clubs - he would have been as dominant in ANY ERA as he was in real time.  The MacGregor ball he played was said to be vastly inferior to what the majority of guys were using.  I heard Gary Player talk about the inferior ball that Snead used which sounded strange because I know I've heard this discussion many more times with Jack.  I'll try to find some evidence of my claim!

What if? Think of all those 2nd places - Nicklaus was always so gracious and generous in defeat. Think of him at Turnberry in 1977 or when losing the Ryder Cup at Muirfield Village. What a man!
