Well, see what P.C. Pulver thinks from these articles from the 1909 edition of the NY Tribune.   :)

Thanks. Great stuff Joe. What do we know about Pulver? His name is familiar. Was he a regular beat writer for the paper?

I first saw the Pulver name in the Public Ledger I think in the teens.  I believe some of his golf writing was syndicated.  He wrote on golf into the 1930's.

Hopefully some others can chime in here with more info on the man.

For one thing,  he was the first editor of the PGA Professional Golfer of America magazine in early 1920s

Thanks John. I knew I had seen his name somewhere.

(BTW, I haven't read Pulver's series yet. It's hard to read unless you embiggen Joe's pdf's and read them on the screen. They are illegible when I print them.)

That Pulver thought it worthwhile to devote so much ink to a long series of articles on the topic is an indication of just how unresolved the basic principles of gca were at the time in the US. Older Victorian ideas were still mixing it up with more 'modern' ideas. I'm looking forward to reading what Pulver had to say and post later.

You are clicking on each 'photo' and not just looking at those thumbnails, correct?!

I'm going to recompile the articles to be a bit larger.

EDIT:  the articles have been recompiled and should be easier to read now.

Joe -

Much more legible. Thanks.

I should have known you could pull up a picture of the obscure Mr. Pulver in a matter of minutes.  Wow.
