Varying turf textures and colors
« on: July 05, 2003, 07:39:04 PM »
TV coverage of the LPGA tourney at Pumpkin Ridge shows a tremendous variation of turf colors and contrasts in the rough and fairways. Given the geographical location of this site I am inclined to think the fairways were seeded to bent and the roughs perennial rye. Your comments? Local knowledge?

Bill,

I don't know what the grass is in the rough, but the fairways are definately bentgrass. I'm sure JohnV can chime in with the rest.

Bill, like Craig says, the fairways and greens are bent.  Johnny Miller keeps calling the tall rough fescue but he might be generalizing a bit.  It looks like wheat to me.  If it was another foot taller I'd swear they were cattails.

Just a brief thank-you to JohnV who emailed me to confirm my suspicions re perennial rye roughs and bentgrass fairways. I loved the visual contrast this combination provided, though I have to think the rough had been allowed to grow to a suitable playing length that also accentuated the contrast.  ;)
