Crane Cup

Has anyone here heard anything about this?  New tournament? The Fazio redo of the Floridian course. Has anyone seen or played since the changes?

Bill Hilbig: Some of the country's top amateurs to christen the Floridian's new layout

If all goes as planned, some day one of the top amateur golf tournaments in the country will be played each year here on the Treasure Coast.
At least, that's the vision of Giles Kibbe, president of the revamped Floridian National Golf Club, the facility that Houston businessman Jim Crane bought from Wayne Huizenga for $25.6 million in April 2010.
As it is, the new Floridian layout will welcome a field of 104, including some of the best amateurs in the country, this weekend for the inaugural Crane Cup.
"Our goal is to eventually turn this into one of the top amateur events in the country," Kibbe said.
Among the players who will be here this weekend are at least three former U.S. Mid-Amateur champions (Kevin Marsh, George Zahringer and Tim Jackson, a two-time winner), at least two former U.S. Senior Amateur champions (Mike Rice and Paul Simson, who also has a British Senior and Canadian Senior title on his resume), the defending British Amateur champion (Chip Lutz) and the defending Senior Masters champion (Doug Pool).
Crane and Kibbe also are better-than-average players. Crane, whose holdings include Crane Worldwide Logistics, Crane Capital and the Houston Astros, was named the best CEO/amateur in the country by Golf Digest in 2008. Kibbe played on the Lamar University men's team and qualified for the U.S. Mid-Am in 2009.
This will be the first official tournament on the new Floridian course. After Crane purchased the property, Tom Fazio was brought in to redo the course, which originally was designed by Gary Player.
"We're very proud of the way things have turned out," Kibbe said. "We think it's a great course. We have spoken to a few of the players who have been able to play on the course and they have been extremely complimentary."
HOLES-IN-ONE
Don Drenth recorded a hole-in-one on the 165-yard, par-3 eighth hole at Palm Cove on Tuesday, using a 23-degree hybrid.
Richard Harmes aced the 160-yard seventh hole at Club Med on Jan. 13 while participating in the Sandpiper Bay Men's League.
Linda Seaward made her first hole-in-one when she aced the 117-yard sixth hole at the Florida Club on Jan. 1, using a 7-wood. She was playing in the monthly couples tournament in foursome with John and Eileen Brennan and her husband, Gary.
WINTER SERIES WINNERS
Peter Navaretta of Port St. Lucie and Andy Spears of Palm City set a record in capturing the 40-54 age division at the Florida State Golf Association Winter Series Four-Ball event Tuesday at Mission Valley in Nokomis.
Navaretta and Spears posted a 9-under par 135, to win the division by four strokes. They shot a 7-under 65 in Monday's first round before finishing with a 2-under 70.
free clinic
Director of golf Bob Komarinetz and head professional Bela Nagy will be conducting a free clinic at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Sandridge Learning Center at the south end of the driving range. Golf club and pre-registration are not necessary.

Renovated Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City draws rave reviews

PALM CITY — Thursday was a day Jim Crane will never forget.
That morning, Major League Baseball owners approved Crane, 57, as the new owner of the Houston Astros. That night, Crane threw the door open on his renovated Floridian National Golf Club.
All in a day's work for the Houston businessman (Crane Worldwide Logistics and Crane Capital), who has dreamed of owning a baseball team for many years and can also hit a golf ball with the best of them — he has been ranked as the nation's top CEO golfer.
"We have had a busy week," Crane said Friday, hinting that he would also like to see his Astros some day train in Martin County. "After the vote was made (Thursday), I was called into the room with all the owners and the commissioner (Bud Selig) and got a standing ovation. (Selig) said don't get used to it, that will be the last one."
That's OK with Crane, who was getting plenty of praise Friday from all of those gathered at the Floridian for the first full day of golf on architect Tom Fazio's renovated course, a project that took just over seven months to complete and includes spectacular views of the North Fork of the St. Lucie River.
"It is everything you could ever ask for when it comes to wanting to be at a good course," said member Mark O'Meara, a two-time major winner — the Masters and the British Open in 1998 — who helped put on a clinic Friday. "What they have done here in just seven months is unbelievable."
While the course and clubhouse are impressive, Crane feels the Butch Harmon Learning Center will set his club apart from the rest.
"We wanted to get Butch to do a teaching school, and it's really only the second one he has ever done," Crane said of the new facility that features the latest in Titleist golf instruction equipment. "We will have (Harmon's) son, Claude, here full time, so that adds a real dimension to the club."
So does a new, state-of-the-art fitness/spa area that overlooks the river, something Butch Harmon said helps make the Floridian "maybe the finest club in the whole state of Florida."
"I don't know of another place that can offer the things we can offer to members and guests," Harmon said.
Crane said he hopes to keep membership right at 300 and added, "We also have 80 lots around the property and that should help us recapture some of our investment as time goes on."
Even an overcast day with intermittent drizzle couldn't dampen Crane's spirits.
"It was two things (owning a team and golf course) that I never thought I would be able to accomplish," he said. "I was able to pull it together and I am very happy about it."
FLORIDIAN FACTS
Jim Crane purchased the Floridian from H. Wayne Huizenga in April 2010 and has just completed major renovations and additions to the club grounds.
GOLF COURSE
Was completely rebuilt by architect Tom Fazio. Approximately 250,000 cubic yards of material/dirt was moved. TifGrand grass on all fairways/tee boxes, MiniVerde on greens. All fairways sand capped to ensure top surface is firm/fast. Five sets of tees — 7,200 yards from the back — playing to par 71.
FITNESS/SPA
New facility located just west of clubhouse and overlooks the river. Fitness center is 2,000 square feet, spa is 4,000 square feet. Pool, hot and cold tubs.
BUTCH HARMON LEARNING CENTER
Building (5,500 square feet) will include TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) Trackman and other equipment, putting area, hitting bays, fitness center, 12-acre outdoor practice area. The facility will be run by world's top golf instructor Butch Harmon and son, Claude.
COTTAGES
There were three existing cottages and three more were added — 30 totals beds. There also is an existing dormitory — 12 beds. Future plans include lots (up to 80) to construct new cottages/homes on the property.
CLUBHOUSE
Completely redone, adding 60 (140 total) lockers in men's locker room, new carpet, flooring and repainting entire interior. New downstairs kitchen added.

Yeah, it's the first year.  From what I'm hearing from some guys down there the tournament is top notch and course really improved.

One would hope it is a success, but frankly speaking I do not feel this course is good enough to host a major Am tournament. Then again I do not know the course post renovation if any occurred.

My thoughts exactly. Would be very interested to hear about the Fazio changes in detail. The players love them.

That will be something that shows over the years. Will the best players keep coming back? There are very few people the first year that will trash a Fazio course in a pretty setting.

Hard to compete with the history and courses of the Coleman and the Colt Cup.
