Thanks to Matt for coordinating an enjoyable October outing for the Chicago GCAers at Shepherd’s Crook in Zion.  He even delivered on providing spectacular weather, with temps in the mid-60s.  A rarity for October.

The course was in fine shape for the time of year and the golf wasn’t too bad either.

For those outside Chicago, Shepherd’s Crook (http://shepherdscrook.org/) is a Keith Foster design that opened in 1999 and is ranked by GolfWeek as #14 in Illinois and #37 among municipal courses in the U.S.  It’s also one of the best values in the Chicago area at $42/round for a non-resident to walk.

Following are a few photos of the course from Sunday.

Hole 5
427 / 400 / 375

Hole 7
344 / 323 / 316

Hole 8
166 / 150 / 144

Hole 12
380 / 350 / 344

Hole 16
151 / 131 / 107

Hole 17
370 / 338 / 328

Hole 18
570 / 548 / 529

Thanks again (site-wide as opposed to im reply) to Matt for organizing. Nic pix Howard -- thanks for starting on #5 (cut six from right rough around the tree to tap-in!), I'll think good thoughts about that hole as the weather turns against us.

Nice birdie on #5. Your result from right rough definitely topped mine. A pure seven iron over the tree by the slimest margin. Carried too far and bounced into thick rough behind green. Two chips and two putts later...

Not a favorite memory heading into Chicago's post-golf season.

Still plent of silly season events left. Prairie Landing has "hard course" day next Monday -- greens won't be plugged until Tuesday. $59 greens fee includes $10 skin pot entry. Might need a cart cover and heater, but small price to pay for not being in the office. . .

Plus, I snuck in 15 holes at Schaumburg yesterday after a deposition ended. Their greens were absolutely perfect (for a public fee). They apparently don't plug their greens in the fall at all. They were firm and lightning fast (almost as fast as Shoreacres for the Evans Scholar event in August).
