Hamilton G&CC Par-3 Colt Replica Course
« on: September 09, 2011, 05:02:29 PM »
I do not really know the individual holes on the originals, so if anyone wants to point out how true to form the replicas are, it would be appreciated.

Hole 1, 130 Yards: Inspired by Royal Liverpool

Hole 2, 175 Yards: Inspired by Royal Portrush

Hole 3, 75 Yards: Inspired by Royal Lytham & St Annes

Hole 4, 95 Yards: Inspired by Stoke Park Club

Hole 5, 135 Yards: Inspired by Pine Valley

Hole 6, 145 Yards: Inspired by Wentworth

Well, I've been to all six of the "inspirational" courses, and I would only have a vague guess as to which holes were supposed to have inspired the holes pictured.  For example -- Royal Portrush.  Is that supposed to be based on the sixth on the Dunluce?  If so, the angle is more severe, and the turf is all wrong.  But it can't be #3, #11, or #14 on Dunluce.

Tom: Although you don't think it can be 14, I would be willing to bet it is a definite attempt and in fact the hole they are trying to replicate.

Tom I think this is supposed to be inspired by Calamity.

Hole 2, 175 Yards: Inspired by Royal Portrush

If ever a hole was there because of the natural landform this is it.  Pointless to take inspiration.

Surely the Stoke Park one is the same one that ‘inspired’ Mackenzie to produce the 12th at Augusta?

Lytham is generic and I can’t figure Hoylake or Wentworth at all.

This stuff gives marketing a bad name!

From the other pictures (i.e. Royal Lytham St. Annes does not have a 75 yard par 3, but it is so at Hamilton), I think they are trying to replicate in the pitch and putt form where everything is scaled down and in some cases much more than others. Although I haven't seen it personally I know the property and the space was limited. Rather than a replica...I think it may be more of a tribute to Colt par 3 strategy on a small small scale referring more to the type of shot required than the actual hole design.

Great minds and all that!
Let's make GCA grate again!

I don't know about the golf holes, but the weather is clearly inspired by Manchester, England!

I'd like to see them reproduce that wild green at Sitwell Park.

Tony, Hamilton is a private club, they are not marketing their par-3 course.  I didn't know it existed until I was fortunate enough to visit.

FWIW, I though the Portrush inspired hole was a very strong P3, even if it is not a great replica of the original.

It's interesting - and great - that Hamilton's recognizing Mr. Colt. I just wish they'd (genuinely) do so on the big course, too. Ancaster, as we know it, has more potential than many, many courses throughout the world to truly be exceptional. The (Colt) details are currently missing though.

I can't see any similarities at all. 10th at PVGC?? Pretty poor!

Do the holes follow Colt's original 9 hole short course plan at all (in routing)?

Paul,

From the little I was told about it, I believe the answer is no, though there are probably some on here that would no far better than I (and I hope they would take a look at the comments I made in the other Hamilton G&CC thread, probably on page 2 by now).

This 9 holer looks very fun to play. But the Portrush #2 was lifted from the drafting table of William Langford. That grassy pit engulfing
the front of the plateau green has stark similarities to holes/hazards at Culver,Ozaukee and other Langford gems.

p.s.  Mark , thank you for the numerous photo essays you have contributed. Very high quality !!

Jim
They'd have to make it a Colt and Mackenzie Replica Course then!

Seriously, it looks a pretty average effort and none of the holes look either inspiring or authentic. The Lytham hole is really rather unlike Lytham I think. As for Pine Valley, no more needs to be said.........
