Slightly OT: The Coolest Par in Road Hole History?!
« on: July 25, 2011, 03:49:08 PM »
Get this for an AMAZING four!  Tony Korologos - who many of you know from the Golf Space made the wildest and most unlikely par on the Road Hole at TOC.  After hitting the Old Course Hotel with his first ball, he drilled one down the middle of the fairway, then promptly hit his hybrid approach into the hole!  And then to top it off he birdied 18 to shoot 78!  That is supercool.

Sorry but I quit reading when I learned that they didn't give up their second tee time to that group that had been there four days.

He would have been hard pressed to write a longer piece about this event.

Carl,

How right you are.

Some years ago I played with a fellow member, Dr. Benjamin Dowdey, on the Old Course. A very good player who missed qualifying for the Briitish Amateur at Muirfield in 1990. We got to the 17th hole and I asked if he had ever hit on the green and holed the putt. He replied "No but Idid hit on the green and had a two."   I believe it had been done but once before, way back in 1926.

I mentioned this to Sid Matthew and it's in his book, "Wry Stories on the Road Hole."

I am not sure if the R&A had even asked for his card.

Well, if you consider it a par "5," as it once was, I believe Jimenez wins this contest.

In 2009 I hit the Old Course Hotel as well, took a 7 and then parred the 18th for a 77.  So I beat him by one.

Playing the 17th with a member of the R&A, I hit a brutal slice that hit the corrugated metal shed and bounced back into the fairway.

Still got a five, if I remember correctly.
