how often does your club cut its rough?
« on: June 16, 2011, 04:30:07 PM »
simple question..

As I have been talking to various friends at different clubs both in MN and nationally, I am shocked how many courses cut their rough on a daily basis.   Biggest question-- why?  Seems like a big waste of time and $$, especially when the maintenance crew could be doing other things

Chambers Bay hasn't cut its rough since last year, I believe. They are now about knee-high and fearsome ball eaters. They are trying to see how thick they can grow it for US Open...

Are they going to cut it by July 17?!

We cut out 12 feet around our fairways weekly from Mid March thru to Late Oct. Outside of that we cut the primary rough at about 50mm from Mid March thru to Mid May about bi-weekly then we dont cut again until the first week of August then we mow bi-weekly until October. If we get some longer and thicker stuff just next to the first cut, we might rotary cut that. We are a UK course, one of the reasons our maintenace costs and staffing levels are smaller of course.

It's cut by the time I'm done with it.   ;)

i seriously doubt they cut ALL their rough on a daily basis, but no doubt a rough mower is constantly going.

We cut ours once a week.  It takes about 2 afternoons though.  It is usually done on Wed./Thurs. so it is ready for the usual weekend play.  But being in the Midwest where there has been so much rain this spring already, the cutting schedule has varied from once every other day to once every week and a half.

First Post!  We are in SC and just made the decision as a Board to cut once a week.  Our goal is to keep rough at 1.5" to improve playability and help pace of play.  With the exception of major events (think US Open), I believe it is a very over rated aspect to trying to create a "championship" course when more effort should be made to improve playbility.

My club has eliminated the intermediate cut. Fairway or rough.

With wet springs this year and last in Kansas, if the rough isn't getting mowed every couple of days, it becomes unplayable, and so tall that mowing it leaves behind huge windrows of clippings.

We just got a 16-foot wide mower that has three decks, each with three rotary blades, and it can cover about ahalf the course in one day. Of course, it's size means that someone has to follow it and do some trim mowing around trees.

The course is currently more playable and more enjoyable than it's been in about five years.

Like Jeff said, I would suspect many courses send out there rough units everyday, but probably do not cut ALL their rough. That being said, our 2 longest days here are Monday and Thursday. We send our 3, large rough units out and cut all the rough on those days, thus twice a week. There is NO WAY to maintain bermudagrass at 1.5" with only one cut a week.

I live next to a local muni course.   I can verify they cut the rough on the two holes adjacent to my house everyday.
