Agreed about Simpson and bunkering. He was explicit about minimizing bunkering from pretty early on. He singled out the 3rd at Woking as one of his favorite holes for that reason. He called the single bunker there a good example of his idea of a successful "governing" bunker, because a single greenside bunker forces choices on the player from the tee forward. And indeed it does. In his book Simpson goes on for a couple pages about minimizing the use of bunkers.
Simpson is much under appreciated. In an age full of remarkably bright, articulate golf architects, I think he was the brightest and most articulate. But also, unfortunately, the biggest pain in the #@*%.
