New Book: "Braid's Best, The Golf Courses of James Braid"
« on: August 15, 2010, 03:36:18 PM »
I've just found this book on Amazon that I thought would be of interest to many on here:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Braids-Best-Courses-James-Braid/dp/1906850151/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1281900364&sr=1-3

I think it will be available from November 2010 and its by the same chaps that brought us the recent Harry Colt books "Creating Classics" and "Master of Design".

Cheers,

James

If you are seeking any info on James Braid, you may get some info via Ernie Payne (http://www.erniepaynegolf.co.uk/ ). His brother George is married to Braids great great granddaughter although he tends to keep thing close to his chest may answer the odd question. If you have a question ask Ernie and I am certain he will pass it to his brother.

If you use the search function you may find that book has been discussed here before and largely panned by the members.

I am saying search the archives. Which I just did, and found that it was other works by the authors that did not receive the greatest acclaim. I confused this (apparently newer book) with their book on Colt. Brian Phillips labeled them "copy and paste artists." The feeling was their books suffered from lack of knowledge of the field, but they were able to bring together a pretty good set of illustrations.

Is it known if this is an update or revision of the book released a dozen or so years ago?

And you might be the perfect candidate to ask the odd question.......

RS - I believe this is a new book and not by the author of the earlier book on Braid's courses who was John Moreton. These two guys Pugh and Lord seem to churn out these books fairly quickly and rely on others for their research. I agree with Brian Phillips thoughts.

I can search for the guys name, but 3 or more years ago I spoke to someone who was assisting Moreton.  He said they had discovered a lot more and it would go to print after a book on Worcestershire. golf was out (which I believe has been published.)  He said they also had a book on Taylor's courses nearly ready.

I'd also noticed this one was taking a while to come out...

I tend to agree with others comments regarding their books so far. The problem for me is that if these are the only real books avaialble on the subject then people will still buy them, however I suspect that if someone were to come along with a more interesting version, they will struggle to get it published as there is already a book out there?

Cheers,

James
