Northern Ohio Golf Ass'n Looking for NLE Courses
« on: February 01, 2011, 08:39:20 AM »
Guys,

I just received my GHIN handicap update from NOGA, and they have an interesting project ongoing.  They are looking for the "lost" courses of Northeast Ohio, and I thought this group might be able to contribute to the cause...so here are the details (paging Mr. Disher to the white courtesy phone!)...

Attention: Golf Historians, Enthusiasts and Trivia Buffs

In 2009, the Northern Ohio Golf Association began the long process of digitally archiving over 75 years of local golf archives.  These archives, dating back to 1926, consist of newspaper clippings, tournament results, local golf magazines and photos encompassing the rich history of golf in northern Ohio.

During the archiving process, NOGA came across a surprising number of courses that have either ceased to exist, changed names or never came to fruition.  Click here for a golf map of northern Ohio from 1926.  Listed below are some of the clubs we are looking for.

Walnut Crest Country Club "The Pinehurst of the North"
Lyndhurst Golf Course
National Town & Country Club
Berea Golf & Country Club - located on the corner of Berea Rd. & Sprague Rd.
Cedarhurst Golf Course
Riverside Golf Course - located on of Rt. 252
Boston Hills Country Club
Orchard Hills Golf Course
University Heights Golf Club - 18-hole, Par 3 course located on Lorain Rd.
Lakeshore Country Club
Tam-A-Rac Golf Course
Breathnack Golf Course
Pebblebrook Golf Course
Starwood Golf Course
Parkbrook Golf Course
Breathnach Golf Course

NOGA is asking for your help!  Our goal is to learn more about these once forgotten golf courses.  We are looking for information pertaining to any lost golf course - name, location, year opened/closed, course architect and other related information.

Example: Dover Bay Country Club
Located in Bay Village at Clague Rd. & Lake Rd.  Designed by Bert Way, it opened in 1904 and eventually closed near the end of World War II.  It later became a housing development.  Dover Bay Country Club was one of the Cleveland District Golf Association's (NOGA) eight original member clubs in 1917.

For more information regarding this project, please contact Bob Wharton at Bob@noga.org or call (440) 686-1070.  Your support is greatly appreciated!

Evan,
If I were paged to the courtesy phone, I wouldn't be able to find it. I'm out in the boondocks at the moment but will respond when I return home next week. I think I can help.

Duh! Google or Bing!

I Binged Orchard Hills golf course Ohio and came up with

Evan,
I have noted most of the courses around Cleveland from the NARA aerials taken in the 1930s. I identified the ones that still exist but there are a few that seem to be nle. Addresses or even approximate locations for the ones you listed would be very helpful. Maybe we can match a few of the aerials.
